Bennett, Arnold: Anna of the Five Towns, v1, 09 Aug 2007
This was inspired by RWood's posting of Bennett's 'How to Live on 24 Hours a Day', which caused me to remember his novels, which I read decades ago. I have only a dim memory of their being somewhat earnest.
Here's a summary from Wikipedia:
'The plot centres on Anna, daughter of a wealthy but miserly and dictatorial father, living in the Potteries area of Staffordshire, England. Her activities are strictly controlled by the Methodist church. Having escaped her father by marrying the respectable and attractive Henry, she attempts in vain to help Willy, son of a drunken and bankrupt business associate of her father's. She eventually realises, too late, that she loves Willy.'
The father is a miser and the book seems to be an anglicised version of Balzac's 'Eugenie Grandet'. The plots are surprisingly similar.
I've added a TOC, a picture and reformatted somewhat.
