Neal Asher self-publishing on Kindle

Science fiction author Neal Asher is giving self-publishing a go. He has just released a reworked reprint of his novella "The Parasite" on the Kindle. This was one of his first works to get published.

Available here:
£3.56 from Amazon.co.uk or for $4.99 from Amazon.com

As far as I can see there are no geographic restrictions, although the price varies for the different regions.

Depending on how successful it is he might release more of his work to which he retains the ebook rights. If you like his stuff, be sure to support this effort.

It's also interesting to see some of the big, established authors trying their hand at self-publishing.

Actually, it's established authors who already have a following who are most likely to succeed at this kind of self-publishing. They have the benefit of an audience looking for their work.

Unlike most indie authors, Neal Asher has pretty much guaranteed a certain number of pre-sales on anything he writes.

That's true, but the interesting part will be to see how the sales compare with those from his traditional publisher. The percentage of sales he generates through these direct sales are much higher than from the traditional publisher (per unit).

Since there's no massive marketing etc. it would be interesting to see how it fares. I know he's a couple of books ahead of his contract with the publisher. So if this works out to be viable I think it might be a good incentive for him to work on some more novellas or short story collections.

I don't know how Amazon's sales ranking compare to sales numbers but for Amazon.co.uk this ebook went from #3900 to #452. On Amazon.com it went from #38 680 to #4 670. I guess that's all the pre-sales in action!

Seems it's going decently. The novel is #16 on the Uk site for Hi-Tech and #23 for Space Opera in the Kindle bestsellers.

Admittedly the Uk site must be a much smaller market than the Us one.

With self-publishing you can forget about how many eBooks he sells. It's more about how much he makes, since he will receive more money per eBook sold, than dead tree book. If I remember correctly Amazon gives the author 70% of the sale if they sale it for $2.99+

Actually it might be cheaper in the U.S. than in the UK. I checked via a currency converter and $3.56 pounds = $5.75 in U.S. currency at present. Our $4.99 on the other hand = $3.09 pounds so while the $4.99 seems a higher price we actually pay less than the UK customer does. I found the converter here:
http://coinmill.com/GBP_USD.html#USD=4.99

I dont need no steenking converter. Anything with a £ in it is more expensive, eg, a pound of flesh.

The different prices were meant for the different regions. The UK site only sells to those in the Uk (perhaps Europe?) where the COM should sell to all.
