Intro and Question regarding Orientation on Nook Color

Hello Everyone,
Just a quick post to introduce myself. I'm disabled with very limited dexterity, I only have use of my left hand and even that is very weak. I really enjoy reading but it got to be so difficult that I pretty much had to stick to only hardcover books as paperbacks were way too difficult to handle. I tried audio books but they didn't work out, I'd much rather read.

When the prices on e-book readers came down I finally bought a Kindle and a nook to try side-by-side. The Kindle was good however I found the keypad a bit difficult to operate and so I stuck with the nook which I've been enjoying for about a year now. I find myself reading so much more now as I no longer have to wrestle with books trying to keep the pages open. The ability to enlarge the text is also a tremendous help, my eyes no longer tire after just reading a few pages.

I just upgraded to to the nook color which is great but I do have a couple of questions. Regarding the orientation feature, is it supposed to work with all file formats? I believe I read where it won't work for certain types of children's books but with my unit it didn't work with any of the 4-5 books I tried using it with. It will work with the web browser but that's it. That's my only concern for now, otherwise the nook color is great, it's so much easier to use and has so many more features than are the original.

Hi Dan and welcome to MobileRead. Glad the Nook and Kindle are getting you back into reading. I can't answer your question and, unless someone comes along with advice soon, I'd recommend you post your question in the Nook section.

Hi, Dan, welcome to MobileRead.

I believe that landscape orientation on the Nook Color will only work with the web browser, and with magazines. I know epubs will not work in landscape format, neither will PDF files.

Actually I stand corrected after stumbling upon a couple of threads here on MR: Apparently PDF does work in landscape mode on the Nook. My apologies for offering incorrect information, and once again welcome to MR.

PS: Re your dexterity problem: I was swapping emails with a pal the other day who heads a small organisation for blind book-lovers. It seems that currently in development is a device that's not only text-to-speech enabled but with respond to voice commands to turn pages, etc. Bear it in mind for the future. You may not need text-to-speech, but voice commands replacing button-pushing may be of help. Bestests. N
