Has their been *any*news about the nook apps store?
or anything of the like? The last official comment on the Nook Developers board seems to have been back in 2010, and I'm honestly not able to recommend this unit to any friends who might want more functionality but who are also nervous about rooting it.
When this first started, B&N had several announcements about their store, but lately they seemed to have pretty well dropped off the map about it, and it's a bit discouraging. |

I do not think anybody outside of B&N have any updates on their store.
If the only thing holding your friends back is rooting, well, I would not worry about it. The process is painless and very easy and you can revert back to stock at any moment. The NC is a pretty decent tablet and a competitive price, and much more functional once you root it. |

Even when it comes I suspect you will be greatly disappointed in the so-called Store update. Unless that is you bought the nookcolor to use for reading. B&N has repeatedly stated that their store will be for apps that enhance the READING aspect of the nookcolor, and little else. The nookcolor was never designed to go up against opened Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab or Xoom. A lot of people have bought the nookcolor because it is inexpensive, but you get what you pay for and the nookcolor was not designed with the credentials to be a top notch opened Android tablet. It was designed to be a reader with a FEW extras thown in.

I am recommending the NC to everyone with the caveat that you must root in order to get more than just an e-reader, that rooting is very easy, and that you get what you pay for so no apps that use a camera, GPS or a microphone.
I am not expecting much from the B&N app store. While they chose to have an Android based machine rather than come up with something proprietary, I don't think they are totally comfortable being compared to the tablets that are coming out. |

Nook apps store scuttlebutt
Was in our local Barnes and Noble today and talked to the Nook specialist. For what it's worth, he said he's expecting the Nook apps store as early as the end of this month.

I hope it includes an improved reader app and better library management. What's offered now is lacking for something that's called a "reader's tablet".

The one feature I want fixed is the ability to use the same reader for DRM PDFs with ones that are not DRM. I have no idea why they would have a good PDF reader on there and then block it for open PDF files.
As far as apps, I have kept mine unrooted in expectation of this update. It may turn out not to be worth the wait, but I can always root again. I'm just hoping for an open comic reader app. I'm betting angry birds finds its way on there as well though. That game is everywhere. |

![]() And one more thing, as much as I hate Steve Jobs, at least Apple does not equire a GD cellular data plan on their iPad in order to access their app store. I say to hell with Google and the crappy little smartphone OS they spawned! I think B&N would have done better to just use Linux on the nookcolor rather than Android sitting on top of Linux. Linux works fine for other major ebook reader companies, whereas I've yet to see any Android tablet that didn't piddle on itself. Even Samsung apologized for the Galaxy Tab's inabilities after seeing the iPad 2, although the iPad 2 isn't that impressive either. Last edited by jswinden; 03-07-2011 at 01:11 PM. |

I am recommending this device to anyone who will listen, and that "as is" unrooted. With the stock rom I can buy and READ books. In addition, I can highlight sections, email them to contacts, share my views on passages, etc. I can click on a word and get further info from the dictionary, wikipedia, or the web in general. Imagine a name or concept pops up that you want to know more about to give you a better context to how it fits in the book. All you have to do is highlight it and search the web for additional information and then go right back to the book. Many bibliographies now include web links, which you can click on from within the book and jump to the web for additional info and then jump right back. You can take notes as you go, and easily search back through all of them at any time.
Even with its imperfections, it's a great device that is well priced. Get some nice over the ear headphones to use with pandora while you read and I think you will really enjoy it. btw, I also support rooting for those interested. I view it as an extra bonus to an already excellent ereader. |

So if you're excuse me, I'm going to go look up shame on Google, that I may hang my head in it properly (because clearly, I'm too stupid even to fail properly). |

cmanbrazil it is a great device-- but the thing is, it could easily be so much more-- in my field, for example, I make use of lots of bookmarked pdf's-- and the lack of a pdf app that will let me use my book marks is unfortunate-- and worse, it's completely unnessecary, since the pdf app that reads the various adobe DRM pdf files *does* let you use bookmarks.

I agree with Cgray that it is indeed a great device "as is", but what is really frustrating that it could be so much more with so little effort from B&N. As previous posters already pointed out, if the device is supposed to be "reading-centric", at least the reading applications (PDF, EPUB, www etc.) should be on the same (or higher) level with the competitive products on the market. At the moment they really are not.
Even though NC is working and is fulfilling its purpose very well, it can be a frustrating device to use if you already expect a certain reading quality of it (for instance, if you have used other similar devices/applications before). I really really really like my NC, but it feels such a waste to see all that potential go to waste just because someone has made a lazy/cheap job while making the software for the device.. |
