Writer's take note(s): Scalzi on using the Cr-48

John Scalzi just posted some observations on using Google's Cr-48 for his writing. Seems his experience was/is an over all positive one but with the probs coming from the need to a persistent web connection. Of course to anyone with half a wit, or well, a half-wit such as myself that part was pretty obvious. Still it's an interesting mini-review of the device:

Like him or think he's a putz, but his blog is actually interesting some days, others it's as if the dude is a bored fascist looking for some group of the proletariat to stomp on and call stupid for having the temerity to suffer the experience of bad luck in life.

I think Google understands the need for reading, writing, and arithmetic on a lightweight device. The CR-48, just a useability test I think.

I am definitely interested in something that would let me write these forum posts while also folding up into my pocket or something like that.

We probably won't be running Photoshop on one of these devices, that's what your home computer is for.

Hmmm, sounds as though we have a few things in common. I'll have to check out his blog.

he's a very interesting person to read. I do NOT read or follow blogs but I really enjoy his a lot, even when he kinda blows a gasket, hey who doesn't!! haha! I think you might enjoy it. One thing I enjoy is he has a sense of humor/bemusement about most things so that helps a lot when presenting an opinion or position with which I won't agree.

Of course I also enjoy Spider Robinson's blog and especially his podcasts where he very often reads his or the books of others. I think for him to keep up the podcasts has been good for his soul since losing he much beloved wife Jeanne to, as I recall, pancreatic cancer.

Plus Spider and I could well have been twins separated at birth only decades apart. hahaha...but we're both a tad more than half-a-bubble off center.

anyway, back to the Cr-48 it was nice to read a cogent commentary on the device without any sort of bias. Scalzi actually ran it through the paces. But like I expected it's still rough and is totally helpless w/o web access.

absolutely, I agree it's a very simple and basic tool for web browsing but with Google Apps, remember that includes Picasa so you can edit JPGs, not RAW files but JPG's for sure and it easily has the horsepower for that. I am willing to bet a lot of the responsiveness is going to be dependent on the speed of the web connection depending on just how much processing is offloaded to the cloud.
