reader not recognized by ADE
Hi folks,
probably I'm the n-th person asking this, but so far I haven't been able to find the right thread/post/link... So maybe some one here can help me. Just the other day I purchased a DRM'ed ePub. Naive as I had been, I only then realized that in order to get the ePub on my PRS-505 I had to install the Sony Reader Library (or what it's called) along with Adobe's Digital Editions. Still my 505 wasn't recognized. So I went through the procedure to "upgrade" the firmware from 1.4.X to 1.1.Y. (As I'm doing all this on a Mac this was quite cumbersome, not use any stronger language) So, according to what I've read so far I should be able to authorize the 505 in ADE in order to be able to copy my ePub. But I'm never getting asked if I want to autorize it?! And ADE doesn't show the 505 as additional bookshelf (as advertised) Where did I screw it? What can I do? If anyone out there can help me that would be great. Cheers, Tommy --- Sony's Reader Library: 3.300.017130 Adobe's Digital Edition: 1.7.2.1131 PRS-505 :1.1.00.18040 Mac OS X: 1.6.6 |

When it comes to Mac it seems there is a problem with recognizing at least the newer Sony models. Fear not! If you authorize the reader in Sony's software it should work anyway. When I authosrize i Reader Library there is an option "authorize with Adobe ID" or something similar. Once authorized with the Adobe ID ADE is no longer needed.
Edit: Discussed in this topic. Another Sony model, but same problem and also a Mac. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...83#post1413583 Last edited by Asawi; 02-27-2011 at 02:55 AM. |

thanks a lot for your answer. I'd love to authorize my 505 with Sony's Reader Library, but I don't how to this?! ![]() Maybe I'm plain stupid, but I can't find a button or a menu item with an "authorize" label atttached. In an act of desperation I even opened the Reader Library Help, but what they write for us Europeans simply doesn't happen: Click "eBook Store" in the Source view, then click the store logo in View area. The sentence "Th store page appears in the internet browser" is not true! What I get is some icons that lead me to eBook retailers. The store page appears in the internet browser. When you purchase an eBook and read it for the first time, you will need to enter Adobe ID to authorize the Reader device and your computer. And in particular I'm never getting asked for any Adobe ID..., but that might be due to the fact, that I already did buy the eBook. Is it possible that my mistake is just that didn't do all the prepping stuff before I bought the eBook? Tommy --- I'm starting to get truely annoyed... |

On Mac's the Sony Reader Library will recognize the Sony Readers where ADE will usually not recognize them.
If you can see the book in ADE, then it was successfully encrypted to match your master Adobe ADE DRM Key, so you just need to ALSO get your Sony Reader Library keyed to the same DRM authorization key. To do this, as already suggested, just open your Sony Reader Library and authorize (or reauthorize) using the "Use Existing Adobe Authorization" option. Then you should be able to import the book into your Sony Reader Library Software from your ADE "My Digital Editons" folder and then drag it onto your reader. In the future, for simplicity, you can just download purchased books directly into your Sony Reader Library, instead of using ADE. Last edited by delphin; 02-27-2011 at 03:53 AM. |

If you installed ADE then the Sony Software, it probably just used your existing Adobe Authorization. Did you even try to import the book that you purchased into your Sony Reader Library to see if you can read it there? Just because they are using the same DRM authorization doesn't mean they use the same library folder though, SO if you downloaded the book with Adobe, it's in your "My Digital Editions" folder, and you will have to FIND the book in that folder and import it into your Sony Reader Library. Then, if you can read the book at all in the Reader Library, FINE, that means all the DRM authorization stuff is ALREADY OK, so then just close the book and go back to the main Reader Library screen and drag the book over and drop it on your 505 reader in the left panel of the Sony Reader Library. (look up authorizing your reader, and transferring books to your reader in the Reader Library Manual) If you DO get a DRM error when trying to import your book into the Reader Library, then it will need to be re-authorized, but from what you are describing this doesn't sound likely. If you get a DRM error trying to move the book onto your 505, then it needs to be reauthorized by the Reader Library software. If your 505 reader is used and there is already another authorization on the device, you may need to do a 'hard reset' first (see the Sticky at the top of the Sony Forum for very detailed instructions on how to do this). Hi there,
Thanks to Asawi and delphin! Finally I got it done! At least I could copy the ePub to my Reader. Actually, it was pretty simple, but as we all know hindsight is nice thing. For all those out there who face a similar issue:
BUT STILL ADE DOESN'T SHOW THE READER Lessons Learned: Avoid this DRM crap! (unless you're running in the middle of the mainstream!) And don't bother to ask Thalia Support! They have also no clue. Good luck for those who still want to venture into DRM business. Tommy Last edited by Tommy; 02-27-2011 at 05:00 AM. |

I'm with Delphin! Jump in and try!
Open Reader Library, find the book (if downloaded through ADE probably in My Digital Editions folder or something like that), and then try to transfer it to the reader. If the reader isn't already authorized you will be prompted to authorize it. To get the book to show up in Reader Library, go to "Computer" in the left hand column and navigate to where the book may be hiding. When it shows up in the list, drag and drop it to the "Library" and then from the Library to the device. Yeah, I know, the software isn't exactly intuitive, is it... Edit: Hey, I'm typing way to slow! Glad to see you got it sorted out!! |

Those stores that appear ARE the ebookstore... the Sony Store is the US retailer, from your post you are in Europe so use one of the stores that appear... that's why they're called eBook retailers...

The other thing is, while you need ADE to get the DRM epub encryted to make it legible you don't need to have the Reader Library installed to do so. It is more a case of either or. The moment you download your books you can do this either trough ADE or using RL from there on it is your choice if you want to drag and drop or sync. Actually the whole thing is mostly a lot easier then one assumes and most frustration stems from overachieving ![]() |
