Why is only at night that things go 'bump'?

Isn't it really only things that go bump in the night that go bump at night, other things might well go bump at other times?

Why do they not go bump in the day?
Is it akin to the falling of a tree in a forest is silent, unless there is someone there; or the sound of a one hand clapping? |

I would have thought the sound of one hand clapping is a very different thing from the sound of a tree falling in a forest with no one to hear it - regardless of whether these events take place during the day or in the course of a bumpy night - but I could be wrong, or perhaps not.

You don't think that it's because nasty things can happen at night? Like Dracula, and you are waiting, watching and listening, and the dog puts a cold nose on your leg, and you are the one going 'bump' in the night.
Just asking. Cheers |

Why, it's simple. It's dark at night, so things can't see where they're going, and bump into things.
Elementary, my dear Geoff! |

But surely them that move around at night are nocturnal and have some night-vision?

I think sounds are more pronounced at night anyway. During the day there are other noisy distractions. For instance if you are listening to Radio/T.V. other sounds can go unnoticed. At night unexpected noises always sound more sinister, and your imagination runs riot. Your heartbeat quickens as you try and figure out exactly what that bump was and can remain on edge until you come up with a satisfactory answer. As you can gather, I have a nervous disposition.

Sorry, but I guessed I missed the point. I assumed it was like fist bump in the night sort of thing. Happens in the day as well but it's not really that impressive to do in the light.

Its not true that things only go "bump" at night. The question is based on a false premise. Its that only when it is dark and quiet that you tend to notice things going "bump" and that when you do they are more "scary" because you can't see what they are.
Also, its only at night that your pet "monster under the bed" bangs his food dish signaling that he's getting hungry and looking for ... |
