The custom recipes will not disappear from doing a update. The custom recipes are stored in the metadata.db file. I'm guessing you may be in a second library? Or a different library than you were in when you created the custom recipes.

looks like it was coincidence... not the updates but when I turned on my laptop...
I had set up microsoft's windows-live skydrive folder syncing to try to have the same db on both machines... but the way it works if calibre is running when I make a change with the laptop skydrive then saves the new file as metadata (name-of-computer).db so that when i got a new version it would then use the metadata.db from the laptop... etc... etc...

I restored to an older version of metadata.db and my custom recipes are back! so i turned off syncing for that folder... damn!

thanks walt for pointing me to the right file!

over and out,
-tim
