No More B&N or Kindle App on Apple products?
Anyone who is thinking about purchasing an iPad or iTouch so they can have B&N and Amazon books to read on them should probably hold off on that purchase. Apple has told all merchants with apps on their devices that they must let customers have the option to purchase those items through iTunes at the same, or a lower price, than they offer on their own websites and the merchant must pay a 30% cut on all their sales made through iTunes.
All current apps must be changed to meet this requirement by the end of June. Since B&N and Amazon make a 30% profit on their books (through an agreement with the big publishing companies), they would make no money when people purchase their books through iTunes. Either books prices will have to go up on the booksellers' websites, and on iTunes, or perhaps B&N and Amazon will discontinue their apps. Or (I hope) they'll come up with some other solution. The point is this, you should be aware of the possibility that you'll be stuck with iBooks only and that you may not be able to read your other ebook purchases on an Apple device. If that works for you, go for it. But if you mainly want access to all the bookstores, you might want to wait. If you do a Google search, you can read lots more about this possible change. |
