Kindle Archive

I have my daughter on my Amazon account.

In my archives on my K3, I have all her books showing (which are otherwise not on my K3). In addition, I have the New Oxford American Dictionary in the Archive, as well as two other books that I have on my K3.

Her K3 has my books in her Archive (which are not on her K3) as well as the New Oxford American Dictionary. All as expected.

I'm not following the logic or purpose of the Archive as there appears to be some overlap on my K3.

Edit: I was in a hurry when I posted this earlier. Let me modify and clarify a few things.

I have 3 games on my K3 while she has 5 games. We have 3 games in common. My Archive shows the two games she has that I do not have. OK. That is expected.

Of the two dictionaries on the Kindles, both K3s show the New Oxford American Dictionary in both Archives. (makes no sense)

On my K3, my Archive shows two Bibles (that are in both our K3s). Her archive doesn't show either. We both have the same 5 Bibles in our libraries.

I gather that the dictionary issue is common to all (but I don't understand why it's there at all.. and if it should be, why isn't the other dictionary there as well?). But what has me stumped are the two Bibles in my archive that exist both in my K3 library as well as my daughter's K3 library.

Edit 2: Wow. You guys are quick to respond. Thanks for that. I hadn't refreshed my page when I did the first edit above and didn't see your responses until I did.

OK. I see that something must have changed for my K3 to show two shared books in both my archive and my library.

The archive contains all items from the Kindle store that you've purchased but which currently aren't on that device. Think of it as your home library where books you've not carrying around on your Kindle are stored. Some people prefer not to have hundreds of books on their Kindle for ease of use so they just retrieve from the archive as necessary.

As you share an account, the books in the archive will be a merged collection of everything you both have from the Kindle store. If you have something in the archive which is still present on your Kindle then it means that Amazon have either changed the ASIN or its gotten slightly confused. Either way, items in the archive doesn't affect anything and can be ignored as it takes up zero space on your Kindle. Go to Your Orders on the Manage Your Kindle page if you really do want to permanently delete something from the archive. This will mean you have to rebuy any item you mistakenly delete however so be sure about what you're doing.

The Archive displays the books that you own, but which are NOT currently loaded on your Kindle. You should not see in the Archive any books that are on your Kindle (the particular Kindle that you're viewing the Archive from, that is). When you download a book from the Archive onto your Kindle, it should disappear from the Archive.

If at some point in the future I wish my daughter to have her own Amazon account, is is possible to move her books to the new account?

And I'm trying to remember the sharing issue with Amazon, if she's no longer on my account, do the shared books disappear from her K3?

If she moves to a different account, she will no longer have the books in the Archive that are currently there. An Archive belongs to an account, not a Kindle.

The books will not disappear if they are actually on the Kindle, but she would no longer be able to download any that were not already on the Kindle (that are in your account). If she backs up a copy of any books that are currently in your Archive (downloaded for her Kindle), they would still be usable in future.

No. Ownership of books can't be transferred. You could of course remove the DRM from the books, but that may be illegal where you live.

They won't disappear, but as soon as the Kindle is registered to a different account, they will no longer be readable (those with DRM, that is).

Whether you could move her books over to her own Amazon account is entirely up to the goodwill of Kindle Customer Service. There's no way for you to do it yourself.

When her Kindle is registered to her new account, she will no longer be able to see any of the ebooks on your account in her "Archived Items" section. I think that any of the books from your account that have actually been downloaded to her Kindle should remain on the Kindle and remain readable.

If Amazon won't move her books over to her own account, you could strip the DRM and give her copies for when her physical Kindle eventually dies. This is ethical, IMO, but might not be strictly legal.

Thanks for clarifying guys. So book sharing is only for Kindles on a common account. Got it.

I believe the shared Bibles in question are from OSNOVA and as such, do not have DRM.

My ebook management leaves something to be desired because I do not know which ones have DRM and which ones don't. I use caliber to manage the ebooks and with the available plug-ins, DRM has become transparent and not noticeable.

However, pdurrant has come up with a program to check DRM. So I should be able to sort the wheat from the chaff once I get around to testing that out.

Edit: I see we crossed in cyberspace. I understand about plan B.
