Battery life question

Hi Folks,

I'm a proud new owner of a refurb prs-600. The battery seems to be draining a bit quicker than I would have expected, and I'm concerned that the fine folks at sony sent me a unit with a crap battery.

So, how long should this thing last on a charge? How many page turns before the bars start going down? It'd be nice to be able to test this somehow - any ideas?

thanks!

Battery Life PRS 600

Hi ................... When I first got my PRS 600 I was very dissapointed with the battery life, but I must admit it gets better the more you use it I now charge via a Sony mains charger which charges in 1 hour and you can read at the same time.
I read about 4 to 5 books per week about 2 to 3 hours per day and a bit more at the weekends a fully charges battery last about two weeks which is nowhere like the length of time quoted by Sony but I am happy with what I have.
I have never checked the page turn numbers but I would think it is nowhere near the figure quoted by Sony

I am told if I shut down each time I finish reading and don't use an SD card I would get a better battery life also using the screen for page turns uses more battery than than page turn button

oh man - there's no way my battery is lasting that long. Did I understand you correctly, that the battery life seems to improve with use?

There also a couple of threads around about the battery life going down, and being "fixed" by opening the reader and disconnecting the battery for about 10 - 15 minutes

What Sony told me

I too just got a PRS-600 refurb and thought that 4 or 5 days of reading an hour a day was not a normal battery life. I called Sony support and the technician there assured me that it was perfectly normal. He said that 300 to 500 page turns would be all that was expected on a freshly charged battery. I charge it with an external Sony charger and cycle it fully. It does seem to be lasting longer then when I first got it but it now has about 5 charges under its belt and does not seem to be lasting any longer. There is no way I could get the life of what the poster above gets (2 weeks).

thanks for the feedback, akais. This really seems like pretty bad battery life to me. I just charged it the other day and the thing lost a bar within 2 page turns. Very strange.

Can anyone else chime in here with their experiences of battery life on the PRS-600?

What Sony told me

Now one thing I did find interesting was that the Sony Technician told me that once the battery was charged (the red light goes off), disconnect the reader then. Do not leave it plugged in to the charger. He said that would shorten the battery life also.

Battery Life

I have found using the page turn button instead of the touch screen does not use as much battery I was also using a 4GB SDHC card I now use a 512MB card with the just the few books I am reading gives a better battery life If going away for a few days I do still use the 4GB card which has more books on.
I am using the Sony mains adaptor to charge I found that USB charging was useless and Sony told me it was OK to leave the mains adaptor connected after charging. ( this adaptor allows you to read whilst charging and when the red led goes off allows Mains powered reading instead of battery powered.
I have read that the red led goes off at 80% charge

Read the other threads on battery usage but basically your Sony tech doesn't know what he is talking about... I get thousands of page turns on my 600, the electronics takes care of potential overcharge automatically (it DOESN'T happen), the red light goes out at 80% charge anyway and LI Polymer batteries are ACTIVELY DAMAGED by full cycling...
