Best coffee in the world?
I like American style coffee over any other, but I hate, HATE, Starbucks, I don't like that 'burnt' taste. I call it 'Sixbucks', I used to call it 'Fourbucks', but time and the economy has killed that!
For restaurant coffee, Dunkin' Donuts and McDonalds are awfully hard to beat. Though their premium Latte's kind of suck. Too sweet! Got a Keurig machine for Christmas. It is truely the Deus ex machina of modern beverages. How do you like your joe? |

pre-processed by cats. I often wonder if Strider and Arwen will eat coffee cherries? I'll wash cat poop for $200 a pound!
but seriously, for coffee bars, I like Tully's. for at home, I've been drinking a coffee from a small roasterie on Vashon Island. they specialize in fair trade and organic coffee. |

I stopped drinking coffee a long time ago and instead drink green tea (unsweetened) that I carefully brew. I found the taste much more pleasing than that of the coffee I had drunk for more than 40 years.
INterestingly, there was an article in the Journal of Periodontology that said that drinkers of green tea had significantly less gum disease than those who didn't drink it, which is in addition to its lowering cholesterol and weight control benefits. |

What is considered the best coffee (apart from the stuff extracted from droppings of jungle living Civet) is Blue Mountain from Jamaica. Again, here in my town I can have a cup of that stuff cheaper than cup of standard Starbucks stuff. (there isn't Starbucks establishment within several hundred kilometres from here) For everyday coffee drinking I just buy decent green coffee beans wholesale and I am roasting them at home in small batches once a week. I do not have fancy roaster but the freshness of my coffee makes up for homemade amateur roasting process. |

I'm not a heavy coffee drinker by any means, but I have a cup every morning on my way to work. There's a little coffee shop Insomnia in the village. They make the best cup of coffee. It's always piping hot just as coffee should be. My favourite is an americana. We have a couple of Starbucks here but I'm always disappointed with their coffee it's never hot enough and I have to ask them to heat it up for me which seems to be a problem for them, so I've stopped going altogether.

Blegh, I'd rather have Starbucks than DD.
I usually just make my coffee at home, and since my brewer sucks I'm not picky about the brand. But there is a place at my alma mater that roasts their beans in house and the coffee is like ambrosia. *sigh* |

I've tried Starbucks a couple of times, but their coffee's too weak for my (and many others') tastes. They're struggling to survive in New Zealand; my nearest one closed down recently. I'd noticed it was usually quiet there, even when nearby espresso bars were packed.
For home use, I buy fair trade coffee beans roasted locally in fairly small batches. We grind it as needed (i.e. every time we make coffee). For out-and-about, I've a couple of favourite small cafes that use local roasters. Last edited by Shayne Parkinson; 02-05-2011 at 10:24 PM. |

For home brewing, I like almost all of the many Gevalias I've had. My friends tell me that Gevalia is over-priced, but if you like it, then what's an extra dollar a week?
I too like McDonald's of all of the fast food restaurants before lunch, but I find that typically they let the coffee go stale after noon. So later in the day when I am out I go to Burger King, which has a machine that makes it for you fresh regardless of the time of day. Believe it or not, I can recommend Walmart's Sam's Choice Organic Decaf for only $5.48 a bag. I prefer decaf after dinner, and it's a great bargain. |

The first cup I drink upon waking up -- that's the best one.
![]() Seriously, though, I use a Keurig machine so I try different ones. I tend to like the Green Mountain coffees best, I think. |

In general, I agree with not getting McD coffee after the breakfast service, though some managers at some stores are coffee purists, but it's all a matter of chance after breakfast. There is a small coffee shop chain in the St Louis, Mo area called Cafe Breve that is really good. Or was four years ago, I always went to the one in the AT&T building lobby. Good stuff, Seattle style coffee but not quite as 'left coast'. A nice conservative coffee with a hint of adventure roasted in, well suited to Midwest sensibilities. My wife is the coffee drinker in our family, and her favorite is Balinese double roasted coffee that we can only buy on the island.
The beans are roasted, ground, then roasted and ground a second time creating a very fine coffee powder. She says that it's not at all what she would call strong, but instead, it's extremely flavorful. She says when she takes the first sip, it shouts COFFEE! at her! ![]() Unfortunately, this coffee isn't exported, and attempts to roast and grind it at home just don't seem to work. Stitchawl |

Try nespresso if you have a chance. And if you like strong steam extracted coffee.
Of the lower temperature sort I think I prefer the way they do it in Brazil (at least were I was, both in the office, in the houses and our cook, yes we had a cook, and the car they gave me came with a driver, it lasted only few months). A lot of coffee, like a big spoonful for each tiny cup, heated in a steel pot with a little sugar added to it, heated until it just begin to smoke, then the freshly boiled water. heated till it foams once. Then filtered through a cloth. A sort of long cotton sock held by a metal ring with an handle. Served in tiny cups. Low in poisons and rich in aroma and taste. As coffee I tend to favor Columbian. I would like to taste the Bali once. I had the Jamaican several times and I found it very good but hugely expensive. In general, I think that the best coffee I had in restaurants is in the States. I mean uppy places. A lousy or mediocre coffee after a nice and expensive meal is a disgrace for the establishment, and very bad commercial practice. Bad for the tips also. Therefore they try hard to give you nice coffee, so you will come back. And good coffee, luckily, is something that money can buy. |
