Not that they aren't good books (I loved Moorcock in my teens), but it seems odd for books that are 40-60 years old to appear on a 'Best Books of 2010' list simply because they got reissued.

Why shouldn't they? The list should be considered "The one hundred best SF books read in 2010 by the readers of SF Crowsnest." There's no reason that should include only books first published in 2010. They are new to the readers, regardless of when they were first written.

<shrug> Works for me.

A 403 error is an access denied error, but can have many causes. The most likely is more simultaneous users than the server can handle. Yes, try again later.

No, it's not that either. Dig down to the bottom and it turns out it's simply based on the books that Crowsnest happened to review last year, which seemingly includes books they only got around to reviewing recently, thus explaining Coraline (2002, reissued with a film tie-in cover in 2009) at no. 2. Maybe they should have put that at the top, because the mix looks a bit bizarre. Moorcock has certainly produced better works than a compilation of late Elric stories and a thin filler-novel from his Epic Sprawl period.

Is it my imagination, or are there less than a dozen female writers on that list?

Were you looking for a particular ratio?

The mix and ratings do look strange to me. Asaro rates awfully low there, lol.

It's a bit better than that:
C.L. Anderson
Kelley Armstrong
Catherine Asaro
Kage Baker
Jenna Black
PC and Kristen Cast (Mother and daughter)
C.J. Cherryh
Jaine Fenn
Charlaine Harris
Robin Hobb
Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Anne McCaffrey
Suzanne McLeod
Naomi Novik
Cheri Priest
Jennifer Rardin
Catherynne M. Valente
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro

21 by my count, including collaborations.

She does SF/romance crossovers, so is not to all tastes.

She's also trying to build a career as a singer these days. She's a much better writer...

Noted. But any such mix will look bizarre to someone.

Agreed on Moorcock: I was never an Elric fan, and my list would include the Dancers at the End of Time series and Gloriana, which would likely have at least some folks saying "Huh?"

This list from the UK contains a fair number of books not currently available in the US. The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi is the highest ranked UK-only I came across, to be released in May in the US. Overall, my impression is that fewer are available as ebooks in the UK than would be the case in the US for recent releases.

I could not find Splinter by Adam Roberts as a legal ebook, but searching for it uncovered The Dragon with the Girl Tattoo, by Adam Roberts, which I had to buy on the title alone. Only available in the UK unfortunately.
