prs-600 won't charge with usb charger
hi folks,
i'm trying to charge my refurb prs-600 using a usb port charger (not my computer, but a usb charger i plug into the wall). The eReader *loses* its charge when i try to do this, however. Is there something about them that will only charge via a computer's USB port, or have I received (another) faulty unit? thanks, allie |

ah, just came across another thread asking the same question. However, the basic question isn't really answered there: Why is it that the sony ereader will charge via a computer's USB port, but not via a wall-plug usb transformer? Is there some serial communication happening there such that the prs-600 won't turn on it's charging circuits until it has a USB data conversation or something? anyone have any insight?
thanks! |

Basically this spec shorts the two usb DATA leads togeather so that the device will know that it is connected to a charger and not a computer. Some older USB chargers use an older Apple Spec which has a pair of resistors on each data lead forming a voltage devider to set spiciific voltages which identify the charger. Sadly this older type charger WILL NOT WORK WITH THE SONY'S. Not sure if this applies to the 600, as some of the older Sony units used a dedicated coaxial plug wall charger, not USB. If your 600 doesn't have a coaxial power jack, and DOES charge properly from your PC, then you are probably getting nailed by the same issue. I bought an accessory kit from 'Gizmo Dorks' on Amazon which included both a DC car-charger and an AC wall-charger, plus a spare micro-usb cable, and nice neoprene zipper pouch, all for less than 15 dollars. The also sell just the USB chargers for only a few dollars each if you don't need the other items. So, if you are having this problem, best not to let it bother you, just buy and inexpensive charger that WILL WORK. |

thats an excellent reply - thanks delphin. the prs-600 does have an AC adapter port, which apparently accepts a 5V input. So, it would be interesting to see if shorting the two data lines would make the thing charge from a usb charger. hmm... *gets out the pliers*

Or do as most PRS600 users and get a PSP charger (Sony or third party) to use the 5V barrel connector... current rating doesn't matter as device takes what it needs but anything from 500mA should be fine, 2A pretty much ideal...

i was actually thinking about a small usb-b female-to-male adapter that would short the data leads. that way you can carry around a normal usb cable, and a short little header for the ereader. maybe make a little pocket for it on the sleeve for the reader or something.

Just get an iGO charger setup (www.igo.com).
YOU can put a tip on to charge the PRS-600 using the barrel power input. Or a tip with micro USB to charge a PRS-650 or BlueTooth headset or newish BlackBerry. Or a mini USB to charge an older BB (I don't remember if I every charged my PRS-600 using the mini-USB), or a connector for an iPhne or a Plan, or any other mobile device. I got the Charge Anywhere, which is a wall cahrger, wtih a built in battery, so once it is charged, you can charge your reader or phone on the go. |
