Question Tell us the reason why you bought an ereader

Ereading and ereader devices, including tablets (which provide such functionality) are "in fashion" now, if I can use that term. But, I wonder if reading was the main reason for spending those extra bucks of just the desire of getting a new gadget.

Let's be honest and share opinions ...

I started before they were in fashion. My initial motivator was how my home was overflowing with physical books.

I read many fanfiction, and it is very exhausting on the pc. And there are very nice ebooks out, but I didn't like tor read them on the pc, because tiring etc. And it was a nice late christmagift to me from myself

Well I purchased most of my readers before they where "in fashion" as you put it. So maybe I don't fit in your poll. For me it was a financial and of convenience. I bought a reader because I knew in a year I would break even while having the convince of portability. It ends up the one thing I did not calculate was the convince would accelerate my reading. I ended up breaking even in 1/2 year.

I bought my first reader because I read a lot of books and I ran out of room for them in my small apartment. If I bought any more pbooks the kids would have to sleep in the hallway

My main motivation was speed: from the moment I think "hey, I'd like to read that book" and the moment I start the firt page of that book, it takes no more than 5 minutes and I don't have to leave my chair. Compare that to 4 weeks when I special-order books at my local specialized book store.

My second motivation was that I could finally take my personal collection of scanned books on the road with me. I've been waiting for years for a decent digital paper display, and the Pearl e-ink finally makes ebook readers worthwhile for me.

My third motivation was to carry many books with me on my bicycle when I tour, without much extra weight.

My fourth motivation was that I kind of like gadgets

I bought an ereader so that I would always have a book to read. If, for some reason, I get bored with a certain book, then I have the rest of my library to choose from. I can easily purchase or borrow books at any time of the day or night without having to leave home. Or if I am away I can use the mobile app to get something new. The books are also cheaper than their paper equivalents. I was also running out of room to store pbooks.
I guess all that adds up to convenience.

for work I need to have many papers and books at my fingertips - sure the laptop is great, but I find reading on the laptop very tiresome.
I have no switched to my very first reader, so I have nothing to compare it with: but so fare I am really really happy with the switch!

I chose "None of the above". I wanted an e-reader specifically for long waits (doctor's office, parent pick-up line, etc.), and travel, but , I was not quite sure I wanted to buy one. Then, my hubby surprised me with a Kindle for Christmas.

To read books (in bed) that don't exist in paper form without having to print them out.

I chose "none of the above." I had considered purchasing an e-reader for several years but kept talking myself out of it, mainly because it didn't make much economic sense since we usually borrowed library books.

We recently decided to publish our paperback book on the Kindle and I wanted to make sure that it looks just right, so I bought one! I'm loving it! I've been reading many different genres and it's very convenient to always have a wide assortment of reading material right there on the device!

I could choose several of those selections. I am an avid reader - sometimes. I can go six months or so without touching a book and then start up again and read my way through dozens. I have certainly read a lot since I got my device. It was a cool gadget and I knew I would want one when I first heard about them. All the same, I put it off for a year though a lot of that had to do with the Kindle not being available in Australia at the time. My bookshelves are overcrowded - some shelves are two books deep. I am sure there are books there I have forgotten I own. So, for me, there were many reasons. One thing I know for certain, I love my Kindle and have not regretted buying it for one moment.

I bought one because I got tired of dogearing/bookmarking/spine bending to save my page and having my kids instantly lose it when trying to "read". Cute, but not so reader friendly.

Several reasons, not all of which are in your poll

- I am an avid reader and love reading books
- I lack the space to keep them all in paper
- I read some things which are not in print (course notes, for example) and this lets me carry them with me and read them more comfortably than off a computer
- I read in French so the built-in dictionary is helpful to me
- I am not a huge music person so the text to speech feature appealed to me so I could have something to do while walking, commuting, at the gym

The ebook reader has been a dream come true for me. I love my Kindle!
