Memory Card and Folders

Has anyone coped files to a memory card, with a multi level forlder structure? And did the reader handle it?

I am primarily interested in how the 650 handles it.

So if I create a structure of a number of Folders A, B, C, and D, then under A having a, b, c. And so forth.

Thanks.

In PRS-350 you can have the folder structure, but the books are listed as there is no structure

Sony doesn't care how you copy them across to the card but equally doesn't use the Folder/file structure to show any form of organisation... it uses the metadata associated/within each book file...

OK, thanks.

So no matter the file structure, if I put them on a card directly (copy/paste) they are just a bunch of titles.

OK.

If your intent is to do authors by series, I believe the way to manage that would be to have collections marked by series.

For example - Joan Hess has two series, Claire Malloy mysteries and those set in the town of "Maggody", so there'd be one called "Hess_Maggody" and the other "Hess_Malloy".

What exactly are you hoping to accomplish with sub-folders?

On 300/505 SD/MS card access is quite a bit buggy. Under seemingly random circumstances some deeply nested files / folders are not visible to the reader. Non-latin chars in file / folder names, again randomly, lead to the same effect (according to Chinese users, having _ or latin char as starting/trailing letter of the file/folder fixes this problem).

I haven't heard, whether this was fixed in x50 series.

I was just wondering. I was looking at keeping some books on the memory card, that I didn't necessarily want to keep in my Calibre library

hearing aid

I find I am unable to use the audio part of my 650 because I wear hearing aids. If I take the hearing aids out to listen to music - I can't hear it right.

Does anyone else have that problem or am I the only one who is 75 and lost most of their hearing.

Can you use headphones that go over your hearing aids?

I have been searching forums for information about the sd card. Does the sony 650 read from the sd card? Or is it just reserve and you load the card from within the reader when you want to read something on it? I wonder what to do with it. Do I load the books I already read? Or do I load the books I want to read?
I think I am as clear as mud. But I can't find anywhere what the sd card's purpose is, so I don't know how to best use it.

An excellent question, as I'd thought the material on the card would be a separate access, with only the stuff directly on the device appearing otherwise. Nope - everything appears together; the items from the card have a little "SD" logo next to them. The only thing "separate" would be that collections cannot span both; if you have 5 mystery novels on the reader and 17 on the card, you can't have a single 22-book "mystery" one.

The card's purpose is for extra space, and even that mostly for music files, unless you're carting around enough stock for a public library of a decent sized municipality!

i Have about 1400 books. Not all are on the reader. I don't listen to music while I read, so I guess there is little to no purpose for the SD card. And it's too big to be an mp3 player! I have an iphone for that.

My 505 doesn't have much internal memory so I keep some books on the internal memory and most of the books on the SD card. With my 950, there is so much internal memory that I don't need to keep any books on the SD card. Like SeaBookGuy, I find it useful mostly for music files.

Many people have multiple readers or files that they transfer between different computers. They find it easier to just pop the memory card in and out of the ereader and swap it among different devices rather than connecting via USB to transfer items. Some people also keep their books only on the SD card and don't keep copies on their hard-drive.

I load all my books (currently 600+) on to the memory card (an SD 4GB card)and dont load any into the reader memory.

It handles the books just fine when indexing and reading them. No 'slow downs' problems reading thebooks, or indexing them or extra drain on the battery.

Yep, it's pretty simple. Actually it doesn't work out too badly because you are still free to use folders and sub-folders to keep things organized on your SD card if you want, while being assured that the PRS-650 will still find and index all your content so that it can be merged with the files that are already present on the readers internal memory.

When you load the SD card into the reader and power it up the first time, the PRS-650 will scan all the sub-folders, find all the compatible content, and organize by the embedded meta-tags.

EPUBs get sorted by author, title, filename, date, and last read ordering just like the internal titles, and MP3s get sorted into albums and tracks by their ID3 tags, and they are all merged and displayed with the files on the internal memory with a tiny [sd] or [ms] icon to show their location.

Simple.

Having an alternate folder based view as an option would be nice, but honestly, with the built in title search and collections features, it's not too hard to keep things organized as it is, even with thousands of titles on the device.

If you are determined to have a folder based view, I think that some of the hacked PRS+ reader firmware does offer this, but I don't think it's working on the PRS-650 yet.
