I have a freenas system that i use as a file and media server. It would be awesome if i could run calibre on it as a service. this way, my books would be hosted with the rest of my medias.

After nearly one year, hope you found a solution. 'cuz I have Freenas and a Kindle too.

Calibre needs X-windows (or substitute for headless servers) for many pieces to work. I believe there are headless tips on the help page http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq.html#id62
