				DRM removal plugin for Calibre

I am hoping that someone can do me a HUGE favor and send me detailed instructions on where to get the plugin for DRM removal for Calibre and how to install it. I have Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, and Kindle for the PC already up and running, just can't seem to get the plugin to work correctly.

Apprentice Alf is the man. The instructions he gives are very straightforward and easy to follow!

I owe him much... maybe I will give him my first born male child, LOL! Nah, I don't think he would want a smart-alek 22 year old... |

Boingboing.net has a recent (past Satuday) article with links. You'll be particularly interested in the Sunday followup.

hmmm, engadget recently had an article about this too (but interesting that this one was written by Cory Doctorow). I guess all the "gadgety" blogs just cover each other?

Some in the comments said that all the publicity could spell the end of Apprentice Alf. Thoughts? eP |

Note that "Providing DRM-removing code to other people within US jurisdiction is almost certainly a felony under the DMCA", and this is why Apprentice Alf's Blog is vulnerable. |

This is a grey area of the law. Many people are of the OPINION that DRM removal for personal use is not illegal in the USA, but until a case actually comes to court and a judge decides, nobody actually knows one way or the other.

Practically speaking, nobody's going to care if you remove DRM from eBooks that you've legitimately bought. Just don't go shouting it from the rooftops. In other countries, the situation is a lot clearer. Here in the UK, for example, DRM removal is unquestionably illegal. |

Within the US: It is illegal to create a program/code that removes any sort of DRM or lock of digital material within the US, BUT it is NOT illegal for individuals to use them for personal use as outlined in the fair use exceptions of copyright law.

This is why most of the programmers for these things or at least the location of the server hosting it are outside of the US where it may not be illegal or at least not likely to get caught, and make it freely available on the internet, which includes US users. |

Of course (and maybe you mean it this way) DRM removal is illegal in Germany, too, but making a personal copy is immune from prosecution. |

In the US, DRM removal (personal fair use) is on par with speeding ... on a closed circuit on your private estate out in the country

This also means Amazon and ADE will start work on a new encryption method. And it could stain Calibre, as well. I agree, this was the greatest stuff since sliced bread, but why did everyone have to start yaking about it? We used to just say "google is your friend" Now we have ruined it for everyone.
