Question CALIBRE\KINDLE NOVICE QUESTION

OK so I am very new to Amazon Kindle and Calibre and having watched the demo twice and up and running one thing still puzzles me. Some .azw books have obviously transferred from my Kindle to Calibre but I cannot open them on Calibre as I keep getting an error message saying I do not have the programme. Am I missing a programme or is this related to the DRM issue and therefore have to accept although I can view on my Kindle I cannot (legally) convert on Calibre. Apologies if the answer is obvious and I cannot 'see' it.

Do you have Kindle4PC installed? If not, nothing else will open azw files.

Yes, it's DRM related, you cannot open DRMed .azw in Calibre. If you install Kindle for PC and register your PC with amazon using the same account that purchased the .azw, you can download (from amazon server) and read that book on your PC using Kindle for PC. There are ways to remove DRM from that .azw file downloaded to your PC, but for legal concerns, we are not allowed to discuss this, google yourself. Once DRM is removed, the .azw file is nothing but a mobi file that can be opened in Calibre.

Thanks for the two replies. No I don't have Kindle4PC installed and I am now clearer on what I need to do within the law. Thanks for your help.
