G'day everyone. I'm researching e-readers, and have been looking at the Kindle 3G Wi-Fi. It seems to review very well, but as I live in Australia, am unsure whether I'd have access to purchasing from the US Amazon site.(ebooks that is)
And I assume if I buy the Kindle device itself from Amazon (which appears to be at least 50 dollars cheaper than here), the device will work fine here?

Anyway, I'll hit the books and do some research here on this site.

Welcome to MobileRead! I'd try posting a question in the kindle forum (go to the main forum listings, then find the one for "Amazon Kindle.") I'm not sure if I know any Australian kindle owners...

Welcome to MR from the Netherlands. Go and look on the Kindleforum for fellow Australian Kindle owners; there's lots of them.

well, in my limited experience, I can't get access to any good free books (the ones many other members recommended in the "deals, freebies and resources" forum) because Amazon always says that those books aren't available in Asia/Pacific region and everyone else can download it - if they're elsewhere so sad

Hi Chris

Hope things are not too soggy up your way! You can purchase from Amazon, however you will not have as large a range as the North Americans. This is due to geographical restrictions by the publishing industry. Most of the freebies are restricted to US customers, and sometimes UK customers, but sometimes it is available to more countries, including Australia. I'm not sure how the 3g and wi-fi work here, but there are plenty of Aussie Kindle owners here who will be able to help. Best to ask over at the Kindle forum.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. After much research (primarily on this forum) I purchased a Kindle (Wi Fi) and a lighted cover for it. With a little luck I'll have it late next week and will then purchase a couple of books and be on my way.
I realise that international customers are restricted somewhat with the choice of available titles from Amazon compared to US customers, but thats ok, with some experience under my belt I will then purchase ebooks from other sources, download them to my computer and use a program such as calibre to then send it to the Kindle.
With help from this great site and people here I'm sure that my purchase will be well worthwhile.
Look forward to spending time here once I'm up and running.

And thanks for the concern regarding the floods we're having here in Queensland. Fortunately I personally am not affected, but have many friends who are, and its a real mess in Brisbane and surrounding areas at the minute.
