Sony Reader Store - country restrictions?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the Sony Reader Store has different availabilities depending on your country? I think iBooks does, not sure about Amazon and other online stores. I signed up with Sony Reader Store using a U.S. address but have only non-U.S. credit cards to pay.

Sony reader store is for US, Waterstones for the UK and I'm sure there are other relevant ones for other countries...

Yes, they do.

I'm in Canada and there are a fair amount of books that I'm unable to purchase. And, I believe, regardless of the address you signed up with(or type of credit card), they use your IP address to determine your location...I could be wrong about that, though.

That doesn't bother me too much, though, as I've found Kobobooks to be cheaper and they work well for me (As a Canadian resident, at least...other's opinions differ).

Hi frolic, and welcome to MR. Geographic restrictions are generally set by the publisher, so it won't matter which store you try, if the book you want has not been released for sale in your country you will not able to get it easily. I believe most online stores use your IP address to determine your location - certainly Kobo and Amazon do. It is possible to use a VPN or other means to trick the store into believing that you are in the US.

Hi,
I live in France but I've bought books on the US Sony ebook store: you have to give an US address (fake) and to put the Sony Library program in English (so that your credit card is accepted, don't ask me why....but I noticed that if the program is in French, my french credit card is rejected).
Each time I buy a book, I loose 1 euro because of the dollar/euro conversion made by the bank but it's nevertheless cheaper than having to pay 4 or 5 euros of shipping costs for a paper book.
