CAN YOU GET YOUR NEWSPAPER ON THE KINDLE?

l am very new to this having had a false start with an IRiver story that has been returned. Having now followed the forums on this site I am now down to probably choosing a Kindle over an Ipad so long as the Kindle can do one thing in addition to EBooks which is to download my daily newspaper (the UK Times) as books and newspapers sre what I would use it for. I looked on Amazon and they do seem to do a 'digital Times subscription' but with some caveats I did not fully understand. Can anyone answer that for me please?

thanks:

Yes, you can subscribe to newspapers such as the "Times", and it will automatically be sent to your Kindle each day. The best thing to do is to buy a single copy of the paper (it's not expensive) and see if you like it or not. You can do that with the "Kindle for PC" app.

They do carry newspapers. However, I have no idea if they have "UK Times"

They do have it. That's why I suggested buying a sample copy.

When I travel I have the NYTimes and my home newspaper delivered via Kindle. I got my papers via 3G while sitting on a beach in the Dominican Republic recently.

However, the Kindle editions lack many of the features of the print edition, and do not even have all of the articles. You won't see things like charts, graphs, etc. If you like the part of your sports page with standings and schedules -- forget about it. There is something about being able to spread a newspaper out and scan the articles that can't be duplicated. Curiously, I think I read more of the newspaper on Kindle, though. It kind of obliges you to go through one article at a time, and you can't just scan.

Yeah I like newspapers too much to think I will be able to give them up completely. I ordered the 3G Kindle today which should give me the holiday and other options in addition to relaxing with the 'paper' version.

As I see it, you can, with the Kindle, choose between paying, after free introductory periods, £9.99 a month via the Amazon.co.uk web site or £2 per week for internet access. With internet access, you would want to set up a scheduled download, using your Times logon and password, with free software available at http://calibre-ebook.com/.

Most people would go with the Amazon version as it likely is more complete and doesn't cost much more. However, if you have the 3G Kindle, and it works as in the states, the £2 option gets you most of the paper automatically every morning via Wifi in your home, and you then could check TheTimes.co.uk during the day via the browser, or could get repeated Calibre downloads if you have WiFi access at other times.

If you are independently wealthy, you could always subscribe to both

Just a recommendation to all to check if you are entitled to a FREE e-book copy of your newspaper if you are a home subscriber. I get the Houston Chronicle at home and am a user of their online chron.com site. As a result, I can download a Kindle electronic version of the daily newspaper for FREE each day, directly to the Kindle via the Kindle web browser through the internet. I can also download it via PC on the internet and then transfer with USB to the Kindle. The Chronicle makes several versions available.

Note that the Houston Chronicle is also available as a Kindle subscription. Rather than paying Amazon to subscribe, I get a free copy from the newspaper itself as a subscriber. I don't know if other newspapers around the world do the same thing or not, but it is worth checking.

Youre welcome, glad you found it useful
If there's anything else that you think would be useful let me know. I'm playing with the idea of writing a conversion guide for ebooks

The Kindle arrived last night and I got started right away compared to my experience with the IRiver Story (so pleased it was not me). Will be spending time over the weekend getting to know it and Calibre with the use of your helpful guide. A long way to go but so far so good and a far better experience than my first one. Thanks for the help so far.
