Titles disappearing from Connect?
I could be crazy. In fact, it's quite possible.
However, I think I remember seeing Terry Pratchett's first Discworld novel The Colo(u)r of Magic on the Connect store not too long ago. I finally decided to go ahead and buy it, but now I can't find it. Has anyone else experienced books dropping off the store, or am I just misremembering what I saw? |

I do remember seeing some of Pratchetts books in the connect store about two months ago. I do not remember if "the colour of magic" was among them. The only thing I remember is that there were quite a few [understand MOST] of his books missing.
If you want to read *some* book from Mr. Pratchett I very much recommand "Small goods". I have read all his books and the "Small goods" is one of the best. I consider it to be the best from among the Connect store. Of course Your Mileage Can Wary (TM) ;-) see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratchett http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld |

That's "Small Gods", by the way. Agreed, it is an excellent book, but I would recommend reading the series in order, or a lot of the references in the later books won't mean a lot.

Ehm....
I remember seeing The Colour of Magic there as well, Nogg, so while I can't speak to your sanity, if you imagined it, I did too. Ah, I see now. It is still there, their searching mechanism is just acting up again. ![]() I found it by doing an author search for "Pratchett" and then clikcing on the author's name on the first listing that came up. That goes to a page with a bio, and a list of all the author's books in the store, the third one on the first page is the one you're after. ![]() |

Thanks Nat!
I tried about a dozen searches and was hoping someone would be able to find the right one where I couldn't. |

You're welcome, Nogg, glad to help. The ConnStore's search engine has greatly improved from what it was originally, but it still has a bit to go.

You have practically HACK the software to purchase something from them. Sigh ... Even if you search for "the colour of magic" "the color of magic" or the word colour and author Pratchett or the word color and author Pratchett You do not get the book. It looks like they are trying everything to prevent us from buying books. Please notice. They even have the book translated from English to American. here is the front page of the original http://www.colin-smythe.com/discworldpages/dwindex.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Colour_of_Magic and here it is translated into American http://www.harpercollins.com/feature...=9780061020711 http://ebooks.connect.com/product/40...000050244.html Last edited by kacir; 06-10-2007 at 04:59 PM. |

That English to American bit is fairly standard, the pubs do the same thing with the Harry Potter books every time (curiously enough, Anne McCaffrey doesn't seem to feel the need to have dual versions

It does make me contemplate what other content is hidden by the search. It's possible there's stuff that can't be weaseled out at all.
I wonder what other books I would buy if only I knew they were there... |

There probably are titles that just won't come up under search, but I really don't think it's deliberate -- they do want us to buy the stuff, after all.

I tried searching for the title which is The color of Magic and I even tried searching for the ISBN. No matches. The only way I found it was via an author search and then clicking the author name. That is not good. Not good at all. maybe I'll call Sony support on that. It's an 800 number once I find it.

They do? Two fields were searched and no result. How is that working on it? Another bug is the Connect program searching int he Connect store. It only allows me to enter in a keyword. I have the then cut/paste to the correct field after the search fails.
I just took a closer look at the Connect store. It's a POS. And that's being nice. I decided to try to find The Color of Magic by category and I went to fantasy. I noticed it's looks like a hodgepodge mess. And it really is. If you are searching say by author and then you want to click on a title or author, you can do so. But when you go back, it changes your sort to best match and then you have to change it back to author and start over at page 1. So you have to go through however many pages you did the last time to get where you were. Also, when you klick on an author, there's a good change you'll find more books then were in the list. The Connect store is a good way not to find books they have for sale. Searching sucks, browsing sucks, and the interface sucks. Calling it a POS is being nice. They have it setup to be very hard to use. I'm a geek so I can handle it sorta. But if I was to have given my mother a reader lik in the latest advert, she's be lost. And rightly so. Search fora book and watch NOTHING show up some of the time even if they have it. Sony .. LISTEN UP! FIX your shit before you find everyone on Mobileread with a Sony Reader buying LIT format books and not bothering with LRX books once the credit is used up. All I know is if it was me supporting my Mom, I'd get her the books she wanted but not from the connect store. Some of the formatting is crap, the functionality of the Connect store is awful. When you test your shit, use geeks. They'll find the bugs. Last edited by JSWolf; 06-10-2007 at 10:48 PM. |
