Kindle 2.3.3 Can't Uninstall Screensaver... And made it worse :)

Hey everyone,

So, I've been on the 2.3.3 version of the K2i for a while now. However, I decided that I could use the 2.5 update so I can navigate PDFs easier. As far as I'm aware, and all I had installed 3rd party wise was the USBnetwork and Screensaver (version 0.3 as i still have both folders and files on my netbook). I ran the network uninstall file. Perfect no problem.

I ran the screensaver uninstall and all I got was the greyed out option and I can't update the kindle. I went into slight panic mode. I decided to download other versions of the screensaver and use their uninstall procedure, but this didn't work. I tried to manually update to 2.5 using amazon's update, that of course didn't work. So I thought, maybe I installed some fonts and just dont remember. I ran a font uninstall file which added some files into root and upon restart (since I still have the amazon update) it tried to apply it I think and then told me to call amazon with error code 00003. At any rate it still pulls up all my books but when I plug it into my netbook I dont have the ability to transfer any files over now. It's become read-only in the root and all subsequent folders.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or tips on how to procede, I can still remove files from the Kindle itself...but I can't add any new files into root and that's really confusing me. Any help would be much appreciated and I've been googling for the last hour or two with not much progress.

Have you tried a "reset to factory defaults" from the settings menu? If you try it, copy your documents folder to a computer first because it will wipe out everything and you'll have to re-register your Kindle to your amazon account.

Good news, that got rid of the read-only issue. Now I just need to figure out why the screensaver uninstall isn't going through.

The update is still grayed out? Did the USBnetwork uninstall properly?

Yep... update_uninstall_usbnetwork-k2i.bin allows me to run the update, it restarts etc. But then when I throw in Update_kindle2_restore_default_screen_savers.bin into the root (that's the only uninstall file I have for the screensaver) I unplug and go back to the update kindle menu and it's greyed out.

It looks like you are using the wrong bin file. You need Update_kindle2i_restore_default_screen_savers.bin.

You can get it from the wiki page Kindle 2 US, Int'l and Kindle DX Screen Saver Hack.

It was a good try, but unfortunately that also leave it greyed out. (also looks like a version 0.2.1). The .bin I have appears to be for any version of the kindle. For example the files available to me are:

Update_kindle2_user_screen_savers.bin
Update_kindle2_restore_default_screen_savers.bin
src.0.3.tar.gz
and a read me, but the instructions are as they normally are for uninstalling.

Those files are for the Kindle 2 US version and not for the K2 International. You had to have used a later version of the hack for installation. Can you remember how long ago you installed the SS hack?

EDIT: Try the wiki page zip files and use ""update_screensaverhack-uninstall-K2i.bin" for K2 International". That is the only version that I know of that will work with any Kindle 2s running 2.3.x.

Just to make sure I didn't do anything weird I tried every uninstall for the sake of trying, dx,k2i,k2. Something just isn't going through. This would have been roughly in mid-June that I would have been playing around with this. Hmm.

I think found the original .01 files here. I've zipped the install and uninstall files for K2i. Maybe this one will work.

Congratulations! The nice thing about the new hacks is that jailbreaking allow the Kindle to still be updated by Amazon.
