Kindlegen output from epub DOUBLES in size?

I just converted a few books using kindlegen and noticed:

112.8 KB --> 266.5 KB
407.3 KB --> 1.1 MB
544.6 KB --> 1.2 KB
632.2 KB --> 1.7 MB
281.5 KB --> 647.2 KB
249.4 KB --> 606.7 KB
87.9 KB --> 192.8 KB

Whoa... is this a shortcoming of the MOBI format or the kindlegen app?

It's KindleGen. At some point the developers decided to tweak it so that the resulting Mobi contained a copy of the original source files (probably useful for debugging stuff that came from elsewhere) and then removed the -donotaddsource option which prevented this.

You can use pdurrant's kindlestrip python script to trim the bloat.

Did you include -c1 for standard compression? If not, perhaps -c0 (no compression) is the default.

EDIT: ATDrake's post sounds right to me.

Wow, what a strange default. I don't need the space, and treat the mobi files as intermediate files, so I'll ignore it for now, but good to know. Thanks!
