Apple rates all web browsers as "porno" now???

I can't get into the secret garden, but is this true? |

One of my peet peeves about Apple is that they attempt to filter what their customers can and can't buy and what they can and can't see. Do you really want a giant faceless company sensoring you. My favorite computer companies: Mozilla, OpenOffice and Aluratek quite frankly could careless what you buy to run on their stuff, they don't try to filter and I don't think they could if they wanted to.

What a poorly researched story.
Safari doesn't need a rating as it can be explicitly enabled/disabled in the parental restrictions. Third party apps cannot, so are instead controlled by age restrictions. |

Safari doesn't get a rating because it is built-in. Apple's own products get a pass on the ratings.

They might need better raters, when I use a browser I do not frequently see sexually intense content.

Oh, you meant you don't get a lot of unwanted sexually intense content. I have to agree, I don't see a lot of unwanted sexually intense content either, but then again I don't need uncle Steve to protect my virtue and morals. After reading the write up, I'm looking for the Atomic Browser, it does everything bad, must be better than Safari. |

Why not give the iPad a XXX rating since it can play XXX movies and view XXX photos?
Apple is getting lamer and lamer. |

I can't see what all the fuss is about, it means you have to click "I agree" when installing something, is that the end of the world? Apple have a parental restriction system in place to allow parents to give a preconfigured device to children and control what they can do. This allows parents to prevent access to Safari/YouTube etc, but would be pointless if you could simply install an alternative browser and get around the restrictions. And in the Bluefire Reader thread, the developers say they self-rated their app, so it isn't simply Apple making them up. |

This is a non-issue. Apple keeps a tight lock-down on its devices, particularly its iOS devices. That's not news. The idea that Apple "rates all web browsers as 'porno'" is simply a sensationalist way of saying that Apple acknowledges that pornography is available on the internet, and it wants to make certain that its users are aware of that. The only thing odd I see in this story is that different browsers seem to have different descriptions about why they are rated the way they are when, presumably, every browser is capable of accessing pretty much the same content, with the exception of browsers specifically designed to give access to Flash content. The rating of the apps is simply a heads up to parents who may have already chosen to block access to Safari on their children's devices. It's simply saying, "This application provides access to the internet, and the internet contains a lot of adult content." Browsers are not the only applications Apple treats this way. It may seem onerous to some, but really it's just one more button to click, and it provides one more line of defense for parents who want to limit their children's access to adult content. It doesn't stop any adult from accessing any content. There are situations where I think Apple is too restrictive, but this does not seem to be one of them. This seems to be a group of people looking for something to gripe about and grasping at straws.
