Can't upgrade firmware - PB 302
Hi all,
(firstly, hoping you are all having a Merry Xmas - it's around 1:30 pm Xmas Day in Oz), I have a new 302, and have followed the instructions as faithfully as I can to upgrade the firmware. It helps little that the instructions refer to "Ok" and "Upper Page" buttons, and the manual calls them something else. Regardless, I have tried using the scrolling 1/3 and reset buttons, and the scrolling 2/4 and reset buttons. (The scrolling 1/3 buttons are higher on the unit than the 2/4.) I have re-downloaded the update file, and tried re-formatting the SD card. I do connect the device to power (USB and mains) prior to attempting this. All that happens is that the "Bookland" screen flashes up and then it disappears; after about 5 seconds the process repeats. I have kept this up for minutes at a time. Any help will be gratefully accepted. Cheers, |

Your PocketBook 302 is probably in a constant reboot cyclus. I had the same with firmware versions 15.1 and 15.2. You have to revert to firmware version 14.2 (if you can find it) or the only available 15.3 beta version, available at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...6&postcount=57

Hi HenkH,
many thanks for the reply and the suggestion, but if I'm in any sort of loop when I try to upgrade, how can I downgrade, or even alter the firmware in any way? The device seems not to be listening to me. Today I tried to upgrade without power connected, because the instructions indicate the device sniffs for the power supply connection, and found no change in the behavior. Cheers, Michael P |

Michael,
you have to use an external card reader to get the firmware onto the Micro-SD card. Shutdown the reader with a long press on the powerbutton and do the normal update procedure. |

Hi HenkH,
I have previously done exactly as you suggested - several times, in fact - all to no avail. Just to make sure I am not at fault, I tried it again. Same result - no firmware upgrade. I am loathe to remove/replace the card because - although my 302 is brand new - there is some issue with the slot it goes in - I cannot get the card out easily and need to resort to sliding a piece of adhesive tape into the slot so it sticks to the card and I can then pull it out. All I see displayed apart from the splash screen, is a "Device is running in safe mode..." message. Nothing else. On top of the other quality issues there in this this device, this is making me quite exasperated. I have been in contact with PB support, and also the supplier about this. I'm awaiting a reply, but at this stage I see the purchase as a waste of money. Michael P |

Hi Gul,
many thanks for this. First attempt didn't work - I held the on/off button down for too long. The instruction really means what it says in this regard - holding it down for too long prevents the process from proceeding. That the instructions are so wrong is a huge disappointment to me and I think, a telling message from PB that quality control is sub-standard in many regards. (I note that on the PB 302 page - http://www.pocketbook-usa.com/products/pocketbook-302 - there are references to 602, 601, and 360 models!) Given the issues others have mentioned on this forum and my experience, I can only describe the whole situation as one that reeks of amateurism. On my device, the clock still does not keep time, one of the buttons feels as if it is not going to work much longer, the slot for the memory card is not functioning properly, and I was sent a black unit, despite ordering a white one. In the event that the seller responds to me (or even PB support), I think the best thing I can do is seek to return it - it is not a quality device, and the firmware is sub-standard. Thanks again for your help, I do appreciate it. |
