New Member with Kindle Question
Just got a Kindle, and I am having a hard time nailing down an answer to the a questions.
I have oodles of e-books (thousands) on my hard drive, but they are in PDF format. I know the Kindle will do PDF, but I want to use the text-to-speech feature, which requires they be in Kindle format. Now, in looking it up, some sites say that using Amazon's conversion feature, which involves e-mailing the PDF to YOURNAME@Kindle.com, will charge. Others areas claim that the charge only applies if you use the 3G (not the Wi-Fi). The user guide that came on the Kindle also suggests that the conversion is free to Wi-Fi users. The Kindle I have is the Wi-Fi only. If I am reading it correctly, there is no charge for me to convert using Amazon's e-mail service. The charge only applies if it transmits the converted files via 3G, which I do not have. Bottom line, is it free for me to convert from PDF to Kindle through Amazon's conversion process? I want to confirm this before I e-mail a bunch of files off to be converted, and end up with a huge bill on my credit card. |

If you have any doubts at all... just set your "minimum document charge" to $0.00 on your Amazon account page. |

You can always convert them yourself, with Calibre or Mobipocket Creator, Publisher edition (both free).

The documents will then go to xxxxxxx @ free.kindle.com. And this also goes for the 3G version. The Kindle will get the documents the moment there's a wifi-connection. I would search/ask on the forum about the quality of the conversion from PDF to mobi that Kindle offers. I think I've read different reports about that. ![]() |

PDF is a problematic conversion format because of the use of custom text, images, tables and such. Calibre and Mobipocket Creator both will convert them. Your results will vary depending on the book and quality of the PDF, it's text font and other things.

Setting the max charge to $0 is exactly what I did. I have converted lots of PDF's with Calibre and using the Amazon conversion process and they have all came out fine. They are so similar that I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon is using the Calibre server to make the conversions, lol.
