Are iBook pubs protected?

I.e. Can I load them on to my Sony ereader?

I think the answer to your question would be: Depends.

If you bought the books from the ibook store then the books are probably protected with Digital Rights Management (DRM) and will probably not transfer over.

If you downloaded a free ebook from a site on the web and manually add it to your device via itunes than it may not necessarily be "locked" with DRM and you may be able to put it on another device.

Other, more knowledgeable people may be able to shed more light on this.

Books sold in the Apple iBookstore use Apple's "FairPlay" DRM mechanism and can't be read on a Sony Reader.

Thanks HarryT & nursedude. I was looking to rationalise my ebooks, into one reader, without breaking the law. It doesn't look like I can, so now I have to search my soul, to see if I am willing to break the law and strip the DRM from my Sony Epubs, so I can load them into iTunes.

Note I am not condoning any illegal activity.

Well, in a way you can get all your ebooks into one reader just not one piece of software. There are iPad/Iphone apps for all the major ebook retailers so one device could cover all your bases. The one major holdout, Sony, was to release their reader software for Apple devices this month although there are apps that can read Sony EPUB DRM.

You do know that DRM can be removed.

Please do explain how Apple's DRM can be removed. If you know, you're the only one who does...

As an aside, I recently learned that if you download samples from Apple's iBookstore, they are (apparently) DRM-free. But of course this doesn't help with your problem.

Yes, samples are DRM free, but full books (even free ones) are not.

There is no Sony ePub DRM. They use the de facto standard Adobe ADEPT. Which means you can already read books purchased from them in apps such as Txtr and Bluefire.

I will condone this particular activity. DRM only serves to punish legitimate consumers. Removing it may not be legal, but it is certainly ethical.

Yes there is. Call it what you want, it's DRM that Sony uses for its ePubs.

It's not that standard. There are different versions of the sdk which is up to the vendors to pick which one to use. Which is why for example you can't read B&N purchased books which use ADEPT on the Sony.

Well I've bitten the bullet, and stripped the DRM from my Sony/Adobe Epubs, and loaded them into iTunes and therefore IBooks. I wait for the fun police to come banging on the door.

The fun police don't usually come "banging on the door". Usually the black helicopter hovers over your roof and they rappel down from the chopper and crash in through the windows (flash bang optional but always fun). Say "Hi" for me...

If all you do is strip DRM from ebooks that you have purchased for your own use, I seriously doubt you will have any visits from the fun police.
