Onions vs chewing gum

I am about to go cut up two large onions. I usually have a hard time doing this because I get all teary eyed.

Today will be different.

I have always heard that chewing gum stops the eyes from watering when cutting up onions. Today I am going to use that often heard but never tried advice.

Today is the day that I will finally know.

The gum that I am going to be chewing is Dentyne Fire - spicy Cinnamon. I plan on chewing three pieces which is 1 1/2 serving.

I just cut up a practice onion without chewing gum just to make sure that these onions I purchased are not defective.

The onion works just fine. I feel like I just spent an hour crying.

Cut off the root end first. No tears.

that does not always work. I've had some real killer onions. I've tried the matchstick in the mouth, keeping the onions in the fridge, washing them after peeling them. it seems to be a real crapshoot

I cut up some onions tonight that made my eyes burn, but it was worth it, the soup was great.

Did you try putting the gum in your eyes? That should work.

Cutting the onions under water, tap open, helps. Mind you: only the onions under water.

I finally ushered out the last member of our extended family. My two year old's birthday party ended around six hours ago and they decided to stay and visit. It would have been nice if they decided to stay and help clean up a bit.

The onion was an interesting affair.

I noticed that I was not bothered too much by the toxic gasses if i chomped on the gum like my son does, mouth wide open with loud quick chomps. When I chewed the gum at my normal pace with my mouth closed the onion started to make me teary eyed.

I tried it both ways a couple times. I would say that when I was chewing gum with my mouth closed the onion bothered me by 90% and when my mouth was open it bothered me by about 20%.

Now i have to research online and see what other people have to say about it.

Isn't the chewing him for after you eat onions.

My money is on the onions since it can come out in your pours. Chewing gum will only last a few min. Onion breath last for hours.

BTW, I have not chopped an onion in the past few years. It is to easy to get bags of frozen chopped onions.

The frozen onions taste as good as they sound in my opinion.

oh I don't like them at all for cooking! I think they are watery!
