Second hand ebook store
So has the concept of a second hand ebook store been brought up yet?

Never happen since if you read the fine print on your ebook purchase you will discover that you aren't allowed to resell or even give away your ebook. The bigger question is if this agreement between you and the ebook seller is even completely legal.

Somewhere in New York City, a Publisher just hyperventilated in fear.

I haven't seen those agreements. Apple let's you have access to purchased stuff for 5 other computers by authorizing or deauthorizing them. What a nightmare!

![]() I did suggest they could be sold on CD or memory cards to enable second hand sales and to satisfy people who like to put things on display on shelves, but most people just rubbished the idea completely. I doubt any of the publishers would want to see a continuation of the theft of income they have had for centuries from the sale of second hand books anyway. |

Second hand ebooks? Sounds like the people who download books from Project Gutenberg and re-sell them on ebay.

For example, let's say I buy an ebook with DRM. I can use this on multiple devices; I can also back up the file to multiple computers, to my Dropbox account, to CD's that I keep in my apartment or put into a bank vault. So technically, even if I transfer ownership/license/access/whatever you call it to another person, the only way that can work is with a permanent requirement for a rather stringent DRM. By the way, I haven't heard of anyone complaining about "selling used iPhone apps." IMO the main reason for complaints here is that we are used to "reselling books" as opposed to "reselling digital content," and we're treating ebooks like paper books. All that said, I don't think it's completely impossible; for example, Amazon or B&N might eventually do something where they transfer the ebook for a fee. But it doesn't seem likely to me. |

It is too hard to ensure that the original owner completely deletes his copy or copies. Digital stuff is too easy to create copies of. Real books are a different thing altogether. There is only one physical thing, that can be passed from person to person, and no copies are created.

Yep... Mind you I don't necessarily fault people for wanting to sell ebooks. It's more that the normalcy of how we treat a product is very heavily based on what we're used to.
For instance, ads in broadcast TV shows, acceptable; ads for movies at the start of a movie, acceptable; non-movie ads at the start of a movie, a bit weird; ads in the movie itself, intolerable. Put the movie on broadcast TV, and all of the sudden ads are acceptable again. ![]() |

It's not as silly as it sounds. Our (EU) copyright act gives me the right to resell software, without having to ask the original licensor for permission. It also gives me the right to "decompile" software and modify it for compatibility purposes.
Does that mean I am allowed to remove DRM to be able to do so? Probably yes, but it's not been tested in court yet. |
