Search for microscopic black hole signatures at the Large Hadron Collider
December 15th 2010

The CMS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has completed a search for microscopic black holes produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions. No evidence for their production was found and their production has been excluded up to a black hole mass of 3.5-4.5 TeV (1012 electron volts) in a variety of theoretical models.

Fascinating. I await the final verdict on this news. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for string theory. The idea of extra dimensions is just plain cool as all get-out. A pity if such a beautiful hypothesis has to end in collision with hard nasty facts.

But the problem is (as you likely know) is that they have just kept adding dimensions and fiddling with initial conditions to more or less "force" a solution. This might indicate (which is my belief) that their is a completely different solution/mechanism for reconciling quantum and relativity that remains to be uncovered, something much more elegant than the messiness of String Theory.

One can always hope.
