Hi everyone!
I am new to the forum, new to any kind of eReader thingy in general. I am very big on research and reviews when it comes to anything I order, which directed me to the PocketBook IQ. At first I was convinced I wanted an Amazon Kindle but I really wanted something that was open so I could get my books from numerous places. I also wanted a device that did more than display books and I wanted one in color. I like to read but I am not a heavy reader, since I read whenever my kids let me (so not as often as I would like, haha!) The Nook Color looks very nice but the price tag isn't what I was looking for, and again, not open. So I placed my order today and was told it will be shipped out tomorrow! My question is, is there anything I should do to this device for better performance when it gets here? Any tips/tricks I should know about? I do plan on putting apps on it, which from surfing the forums I understand can take a few steps. All new to me but I am somewhat of a fast learner. Thanks for any help in advance! |

Update the firmware will be a good start, and install open home or launcher pro to be able to have a better home screen, after that maybe install skyfire to browse the internet, a good file manager like astro manager....a good reader app....and a little bit of searching around this forum and you'll be all set...have fun with your IQ

Yes, definitely update the firmware as jocyjoce said. The new firmware, version 2.0.3, is quite an improvement over the older versions.
And read, read, and read some more of the many IQ threads. Also, look at the wiki. |

Tips?
Start here: http://www.freewarelovers.com/android Download all the apps you think you'll like. Kindle, Kobo, Aldiko, and Overdrive Media console are a good start. Check out Coolreader 3 through the link here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=110564 If you can find it, the Audible app. For a desktop-grade browser, Dolphin HD 4.0. If sites with Flash video are important, Skyfire and the Youtube App. Install the largest files first. If you get the storage-space notification, uninstall something; otherwise the larger apps (especially the browsers) will become unstable. Check the various threads here that link to PB-compatible dictionaries and thesaurii, etc. They work fine with the IQ dictionary app and there are some really useful ones floating around. If you want Android Marketplace access, try the tips to run it in a PC emulator found in the comments here: http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201.../#comment-1099 Word is the next release of Aldiko, 2.0, due by year's end, will support Adobe DRM'ed ePubs, including B&N DRM and library books. So if you don't mind side-loading ePubs from the PC, Kindle and Aldiko 2.0 might be the only reading apps you'll need until the PB Reader is up to snuff. If you *don't* want to sideload, Kindle and Overdrive will let you get content straight off the net. If you like puzzle games, look for Klotski. ![]() Last edited by fjtorres; 12-16-2010 at 04:41 PM. |

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I can't wait to get this thing in the mail! My husband is torturing me and told me I have to wait for Christmas morning to open it, even though I am the one who will be home and accepting the package. Talk about cruel!
I will be doing lots of reading up in the meantime ![]() |

fjtorres, about the audible app, what kind of files does it play? Does it use it's own format, or can regular mp3 files be played through it?

fjtorres,
Thanks for the info. I too am new to e-readers and the like. I have a crazy question. Is the PB IQ 701 considered a 'smartphone' to the android world? (It refers to one in the Kobo download instructions). I have been trying to download the Kobo free app and my device is telling me there isn't enough room. I just bought the thing and haven't added any apps yet. Also, I thought I could just insert my SD card into the IQ and then download the file. Or do I have to download it to my SD card through my PC? |

Officially, Android is not supposed to be used on tablets until version 3.0 some time next year. That is the reason why the IQ ships without the google suite of proprietary apps, like the marketplace. Technically, you *have* to install all apps from the SD card but the onboard 2GB storage is seen as an SD card so you should be able to install from there. In fact, the Dec 10 update drops 3 apps into the app folder in the onboard storage and they install just fine. Since I don't yet have marketplace access (though the local wizzes around here seem to be close to cracking that nutty nut) I've installed most of my apps by downloading to the SD card from the PC. |

![]() OK, downloaded, installed, but I can't find the way to access the files saved on my sd card. Does it only work if you have an Audible account? I don't have one, and my IQ isn't connected to the internet. I have an adsl connection and didn't think it's worth it to set up wireless just because of the IQ but I'm finding that some apps expect you to access your data via the cloud, or offer only online help files. I'd appreciate if someone could point me to some instructions, because I haven't been able to find them. Last edited by citac; 12-19-2010 at 07:21 AM. Reason: additional questions |

upgrading the IQ..
![]() Well, I am still having trouble completing the latest firmware upgrade. I am getting a 'not enough space' 'message. I looked at my apps and am told I have no third-party apps. I seem to recall reading something about not have Google on the IQ. I do have google loaded. Could someone tell me how to remove apps and what I could possibly remove. |

Wow, Thanks for Audible fjtorres!
I had to uninstall some of my apps to get it to work. I had all kinds of newspapers, usatoday, etc. Here is how. Settings, Applications, manage applications, touch and hold on any app you want deleted and it will give you the option. Also, I can only play audible ebooks by going to the SDcard to open the file. Audible does not seem to make a library of them. Last edited by Palladin; 12-20-2010 at 08:24 AM. |

I have now extracted the needed zip file from the 2.0.3 firmware upgrade onto my SD card but the device still won't load. When I have the SD card inserted, shouldn't the IQ reflect the space available. It states that 0 space is available. That tells me that the SD card isn't being recognized in the IQ. In my PC, it show space available.
