Just curious what other's thoughts are about doing this

I remove the DRM from my books that I purchase from Amazon and want to use calibre to send them to another one of my devices that I own. Well, actually I bought the device but it is for a friend. I don't want her using my amazon account so I simply wanted to "loan" her the book. Anyway, if i use calibre to send it to her *name*@free.kindle.com you think amazon will monitor it and then wanna raise can and ban my account or whatever? Even though I own the book ?

Just curious because i think it would be viewed as a personal document. Surely amazon has better thanks to do than to sit around and sniff out copyrighted material that is passed as personal docs.

What are you thoughts. Please reply.

That may be a bit too much chutzpah.

Okay so tell me this. I haven't played with the new k3 enough to know all the ends and outs yet. Can you send stuff to it from the pc via the wifi connection. Basically what I'm asking is will it show up as a networkable drive so you can simply drag books over to it as if it was usb?

As far as the friend, they can always hit my server on the kindle and get the book(s).

The wifi part though I was hoping I could right click and do a send to device and it send it the kindle via the wifi if it is connected to my local lan.

Well, Amazon announced in October 2010 that it would begin allowing buyers to lend their ebooks. However, which ebooks will be permitted is up to the publisher or whoever owns the rights. Removing DRM for the purpose of "duplicating/lending" an electronic document may be illegal. I could understand removing DRM if you needed to change which devise the buyer is using, but removing it to give to someone else sounds like a bad idea.

Deleted - I think my brain was running on neutral when I wrote the original post. Sorry!

True. They haven't announced a start date for that scheme yet, though, and what they are proposing will be much the same as B&N's loan scheme, where each book can only be loaned once, ever, and for a fixed 2 week period, so very limited.

I just thought of something else though - it's now possible to buy a book as a gift for someone else who has a Kindle. As long as both people are in the same country (so don't run into problems re geographic restrictions), it means one person can buy the book, but it goes on the other person's Amazon account and is keyed to the other person's Kindle.

There are two issues. I believe that copyright allows you to modify the electronic file as you will but NOT to allow it out of your possession, NOT to gift it.

The agent sells you a license that you may or may not abide, but that's between you and the agent.

I-ANAL y'all better get your own copyright attorneys to advise you on your abilities and liabilities under copyright and contract law.
