[Nook Color] Are the thumbnail jpgs necessary?

Hi,

I have a Nook Color and I was wondering if the .jpg thumbnails that Calibre transfers along with each book are necessary in any way. If they're not, is there a setting that prevents that from happening on specific devices? I own multiple devices and wouldn't want to disable thumbnails for devices that might actually need them for some purpose.

Normally I wouldn't mind having the thumbnails stored on my device. But in the case of the Nook Color, if I want to browse photos, the Gallery app displays every single image it finds on the device, so I have to scroll through a bunch of thumbnails looking for the pictures that I'd like to actually look at.

Ideally, the Gallery app would allow for some user customization so I could just have it display items in specific folders or something, but alas...it's kinda primitive.

do the book covers display if the thumbnails are not sent? For example, if you copy the file manually using windows explorer.

I tried it with one book and it worked.

There is apparently a known issue that causes some covers not to display on the Nook Color--an issue that affects a few of my books, but not most. Since the test book displayed a cover, I'd think this issue doesn't affect the validity of the test. If it hadn't displayed a cover, I wouldn't know what to think.

Hmm I've seen reports in other threads that the thumbnails are needed for covers.

See for example: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=110001

The Nook Classic requires the thumbnail images to show covers. The Nook Color seems to be a mess when it comes to showing cover images. Sending the jpg thumbnails to the Color can be removed. However, I would rather wait for B&N to put out an update that fixes the user issues related to thumbnails first. I would hate to remove them and have people's Nook Color stop displaying them entirely.

Oh yeah, in light of the current issue involving the display of covers on the Nook Color, I'm sure now isn't the best time to mess with it. Mainly I was just wondering if there was an optional Preference somewhere that would prevent Calibre from copying the thumbnails to the device.

Ideally, the Gallery app will get an update that allows for folder browsing or some sort of filtering.

EDIT:
For what it's worth, I've discovered it's a simple matter to do a *.jpg search on my device's Book folder and delete everything it finds to purge all the thumbnails. I don't know if it's really indicative of anything, but I didn't notice any changes in cover thumbnails when browsing books--books that were displaying covers before the purge still display them, and books that were not still don't display them.

Hopefully B&N straightens out this issue soon.
