Choices at $249 price - Sony PRS-950 or Nook Color with upgraded OS in Jan 2011

I love my Sony 950 but the upcoming Android 2.2 upgrade to the Nook Color makes it more like the Ipad....very tempting!

Nook Android hack was around already but it could cause unit to possibly overheat. Official upgrade in January will avoid that problem:

This news on the Nook was first posted here:

but the info was updated with the articles cited above.

meh.. to me e-ink and lcd devices will never really be comparable. For reading a novel or any substantial amount of text that I want to be immersed in e-ink will always trump lcd. For browsing the web e-ink in its current incarnation is fairly frustrating. Different devices for different purposes. If I want an underpowered computer mainly for web surfing then an ipad or nook colour would be ideal. If I want a device for reading books then you can't go past an e-ink display... just my 2c

It's a personal choice dependent upon your needs and desires. The devices are so different you can't really make the choice of one or the other. Even if you go for the NOOKcolor, an e-ink device is always nice to have. I plan on purchasing another one eventually.

Also, what type of functionality are you anticipating that will make it more like an iPad?

I would guess that's a reference to access to an "app store" that is rumored (or maybe confirmed?) for early next year.

Yes, I assumed the app store was in mind. It's just that unless you have a rooted NOOKcolor there's no way to know what will be available. That's why I asked what functionality is sought.

B&N have said their app store will have reader-centric apps.

Ha, that'll teach me to forget to look at what devices the person I'm replying to has listed. So now I'll ask you, what do you mean by "reader-centric"?

I got the term from B&N. I made a mistake, it should be "reading-centric".

Here's a quote from them.

Quote:
From NOOKDeveloper FAQs:

What type of applications should I create?

NOOKcolor opens up a whole new world of digital reading experiences allowing you to build upon Barnes & Nobleʼs open eReading ecosystem in a variety of ways, beyond the printed word:

• Enrich book content with reference material, audio, photos, videos, Web links, plug-ins, and more to help readers get more out of their books.
• Extend book content with applications from cooking to travel to science and nature, helping readers further explore their interests.
• Expand beyond reading with word games, puzzles, and more when readers want to take a break from a favorite book or magazine.

Can you give me examples of the types of applications you are looking for?

Millions of book lovers are ready for engaging content and innovative applications that relate to their reading experience. Here are a few examples to serve as idea starters:

• Reference: dictionaries, thesaurus, atlas and encyclopedias.
• Education: “how to” guides, language learning, childrenʼs learning and exploring and vocabulary builders.
• Hobbies & Interests: travel, cooking, food & wine, home & garden, science & nature, history, geography, and others.
-*‐ Travel aids and tools, phrase books, destination companions, recipe tools, ingredient information, knowledgebases, and wine and book club pairings.
• Productivity: reading library stats, note-taking tools, sharing tools, journaling and book club organizers.
• Games: word, puzzle, brain-teasers, trivia, board, card and casual games.

Now there's talk that the expected app market will not be coming in January.
