Does Kindle accept Mobi book format purchased from other stores?
If yes, what is the reaction of amazon ? Do they remove those titles from your kindle in each update or not? thanks a lot |

Mobi books from Smashwords, Fictionwise (multi-format), Feedbooks, Baen, etc are DRM-free (in my experience). Amazon doesn't care. They do not remove titles from your Kindle. It was a one time deal and it was for a book purchased at Amazon not from elsewhere. |

I think a few other sites did sell DRMed mobi files (Harlequin, for instance, who according to a news story in the news section is phasing it out) and libraries also had mobi books that the Kindle couldn't use (without fiddling with the DRM at least).

Amazon explicitly allows DRM-free MOBI.
Note that if a DRM-ridden MOBI is stripped of its encryption, to produce a DRM-free version, it is still easily identifiable as an ebook that "should" have DRM (e.g. based on its source, which is in the metadata). Amazon does not check this, and I have seen no reports of Amazon ever doing anything to DRM-free MOBIs on a Kindle no matter where they came from. |

Why do you ask if Amazon would remove them? Of course they don't.

They don't now, but what happens if the publishers pressure amazon in doing that ? After all, they invented DRM, goe-restrictions. Nothing would surprise me. |

The only books that Amazon has access to are books that you have bought through Amazon. A book that you buy through another store and load onto your Kindle will not be accessible by Amazon.
Amazon did remove 1984 when it was sold in the US because it was not in the public domain in the US and was sold by MobileReference who did not own the rights to the book. The backlash was fast and furious. Amazon apolozed and the people who bought 1984 ended up with two free books of their choice and 1984 or three free books. I think that all of the e-book stores learned from that and it is highly unlikely that Amazon, Sony, B&N, or Apple will try and remove a book from e-readers again. |

Okay, mine still has them, though they seem to be adding almost no new ones, and the selection vs. Epub/PDF is somewhat ... inferior (lacking).

I tried downloading a mobi from the library the other day but I did not have a pid at that time. I've since lost track of what the title was.

Kindle cannot read RDM Mobit books, it can only read non protected ebooks, this means thousands of titles are missing. With ePub readers, you can find anything you want. What is a "RDM Mobit" book? ![]() With epub readers, you CANNOT find anything you want. Not all books have been digitally converted. Depending on the part of the world/cave you live, there is such a thing as Geographical Restrictions. Some books are available in England that are not available in the US, and vice-versa. This is not limited to just these countries, its all over the world. How about a little honesty in your signature, instead of bald faced lies? |
