I have a Sony PRS-505, and have had it for right at one year. I haven't had any problems with it in that entire time (at least none I couldn't fix by pushing the reset button). Considering that, it's been my favorite device for a year. But now, I've got a problem.
I had left my Reader in someones house, and I honked the horn and asked them to bring it out to my car to me. I had left it on in their house, by the way. When he brought it out to me he must have been pushing the number buttons down the side without realizing it. When I got it the number 645 was on the screen, and, usually I can just hit the menu button to make the numbers disappear, or hit the center 'select' type button and go to that page-which in this case there was no number 645 so I just pressed the menu button. This time however, it didn't do anything. It was froze with that number, 645, on the screen over the text of the book-page I had been reading. (I'm sure everyone is familiar with what I'm talking about, but I'm trying to make it where you'll know exactly what I'm dealing with so that maybe someone can help!) When I couldn't get it to do anything I tried turning the power off. That wouldn't work; the power stayed on no matter how many times I pushed the switch. So then I pushed the reset button. The first two times I tried the reset button, nothing happened; the third time the yellow light flashed and I got the Starting Up screen, and then it went to the Menu screen, as usual. I thought it was 'fixed'. I was mistaken. Now, it's at the main menu screen, but won't do anything no matter which of the options I select (by options I mean Continue Reading, Books by Title, Books by Author, Books by Date, etc.); the power will not switch off; the reset button will not work; and when I plugged it into my computer via the USB cord, the red 'charging' light comes on but the screen doesn't change like it usually does to say it's connected, and it doesn't show up on my computer as being connected. I tried removing and replacing the SD card, that usually causes it to go back to the Starting Up screen, but that has no effect either. It has 2 of the 4 battery charge indicators lit, so maybe I just need to charge it then try again. But I've used it down to only two of the blocks lit before, used it down to only one lit before, and didn't have any trouble. So I'm not sure if just charging it will fix this. But I'm in the process of letting it charge using the 'sold-separately' AC Adapter, not the USB cord-and the red charging light is on, so I assume it is charging. If anyone has ever had a similar situation and/or knows what I should do, please let me know. This Reader has practically become family over the past year and I don't know how long I can go without it!! I'm in dire need of a fix (to put a junkie spin on it ![]() Thanks Last edited by prodygi; 12-03-2010 at 10:49 PM. |

If that does'nt work -
Hard Reset (PRS-505) 1. Ensure the Reader is powered off by checking that the indicator next to the power button is not illuminated. 2. On the back of the Reader, using a pin or paper clip, press the RESET button. 3. Turn on the Reader. 4. While the screen displays Starting up... , simultaneously press and hold down the Mark button and the VOL + button until the Reset All screen is displayed. NOTE: If Starting up... does not display on the screen, charge the Reader's battery for several hours before attempting the reset process again. 5. Press the 5 button to reset the Reader. but it will remove all your content from the device. |

The battery might need to be charged up. If you have an ac charger, try charging with that for quite awhile. AC chargers work much better than charging via computer/usb especially when the battery is almost completely dead.
Good luck! dordale ![]() |

Discharged battery is the most likely cause, if your reader doesn't respond to resets.
