16 Level Screen only for Wifi models?

I did a search on the forum but couldn't find an answer. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the screen of the original Kobo (which I have) vs the new Wifi ones?

I'm starting to find that the white background behind the text is a bit dull compared to the text that I am reading, even with plenty of light around. I'm looking to buy a second device that I can share with the family, and I'm wondering if it's the same way between all ereaders (Kindle, Nook, Sony, etc).

The comparison chart (http://koboereader.com/cad/Kobo-ereader-comparisons/) says that all the eReaders have 16 level screens, but is that for the original Kobo too, or just the Wifi? Also, can anyone tell me how the Kobo Wifi screen compares to the others, in terms of background brightness/text clarity?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

The 16 level screens are only on the Wifi device. I'm sorry I can't elaborate more on it since I have the original Kobo, but I have heard that it's a drastic difference between the new and the old. Mind you, I have no problem with my Kobo's screen

I don't know why, but the chapters site actually shows both the original and wi-fi versions in their comparisons; you would figure Kobo would do the same to try and entice people a little more:

The difference is hardly drastic. It's barely noticeable, if at all.

Like I said, I only have the original. Just repeating what I heard/read.

I'm sure nothing beats the pearl screen as of yet.

The 16 level screen is noticeably different, to my eyes. It's not like Pearl, but the contrast is much improved. The original was issued with 8 levels of gray and will stay that way. It's not something that could be changed by a firmware or software update.

The old Kobo has only 8 screen level
if you want to see to difference you can open a gray scale photo via Adobe Photoshop and convert it into 8 and 16 gray format and see the difference by yourself.

I have both an original and a wifi Kobo and I would agree that there is a very noticeable difference between the 2. Maybe not under really bright conditions (i.e. in store) but in normal use I see a difference. Too me it looked distinctly more white rather than grey. I've gotten used to it now, but every once in a while it jumps out at me again. It is possible that there are differences between batches.
