Newcomer from Downunder

Hello everyone.

My name is Alan and I am a raw beginner in the subject of ebooks. I like the feel of the MobileRead Forum and hope all you experts will make allowance for my state of ignorance

My motivation is that, having spent a full career in the fields of science and technology, I am trying to make up for lost time in reading the classic works of literature and philosophy. I also want to re-read some of the great books of our own time, books that I first read perhaps forty or fifty years ago.

Our house is already groaning under the load of books collected over the past several decades and neither my wife, Meg, nor I want to add to this load. A few hundred books in the space of a small paperback sounds like heaven!

The attraction of the physical artifact of a well produced printed book is something that I have always felt and always will. However, I have enough of these and there is certainly no need to look for this quality in books whose real attraction and value is in the thoughts or stories contained in them. Again a comfortable ebook will fill the bill nicely.

At the moment we have taken a first step by downloading Kindle for PC and experimenting with a few low cost or free books. This is a step up from downloading free text from Gutenberg, which can be exhausting to read.

In the next few weeks/months we will choose a Reader and get fully into the stream. At the moment we are just dipping a toe in the water!

Looking forward to meeting a few of you at the Forum.

Ciao,
A.

Good to have your company, Alan. You'll soon find the massive difference between reading on an ebook-dedicated e-ink device and a computer screen. You might well often find -- as I did after half a century of book hoarding -- that the physical elements of reading on paper assume less and less importace over the days and the weeks and that you and Meg will be able to clear many of your burdened shelves without a tear. Best wishes. Neil

Hello, Alan, and welcome. I love my Kindle. I know what you mean about the house groaning from the weight of so many books. I will always love my paper books, but I love downloading and reading on the Kindle, and I don't have to add books to my groaning bookcases.

Try downloading some of the books from our library, (see link in my signature), many are from Gutenberg, but with better formatting!

Hi Neil.
I am encouraged to learn that there is at least one other member of MR who can refer to 'half a century' of book hoarding. There can't be many of us!
(No need to reply here - I'll catch up with you in one of the Forums).
Alan.
