Perhaps you should be asking this in the Nook forum...

Kindle 3 has the eInk Pearl screen.
nook has the older one. Other product specific questions probably would do better either in the nook forum OR in the Which one should I buy forum. |

The Nook can read ebooks from other sellers, I believe it can read Sony and Kobo books. It cannot read books from Amazon.
The Nook is similar to the Kindle. They both have 3G/WiFI or a WiFi only model They both have a 6 inch screen They both have built in dictionaries They both can read PDF's but poorly They both have an MP3 player How they differ The Nook has a LED touch screen display at the bottom of the reader. It is used for all navigation through menus and can be used to turn pages. It also sucks up battery life Kindle has a keyboard and directional pad that are used for navigation. This makes it easier to use the note feature and the dictionary feature on the Kindle then on the Nook. It also makes wireless shopping easier on the Kindle then on the Nook. Kindle has the Pearl Screen with better clarity then the Nook screen. Kindle is lighter and smaller then the Nook. Nook has a replaceable battery and memory card slot. Some people love this, some people don't care. I had the replaceable battery and memory card slot on my K1 and never used either. I don't think it is important. But that is me. Amazon has the largest e-book store and some of the best customer service around. Nook allows you to borrow books from the library. Kindle really cannot, there are some rare exceptions to this or you have to be willing to strip the DRM off of a library book. When it comes down to it, they are similar devices. There are pros and cons to each. Go to your local Best Buy and try out both of them. Check the e-book stores and see which one has more of the books that you want at a price that makes sense to you. |

You are going to have that problem with all of the e-readers. Geo Restrictions are not specific to one distributor. More likely then not you will find if a book is not available on Amazon it will not be available for B&N.
There are work arounds that are posted in topics in the Kindle forum and the Nook forum. Once you have a US address and some type of program to mask your IP address you should be able to buy from the US store easily enough. |

I don't know about other places but I know on Amazon you can just use ANY US address to have access to the US Amazon store. They are never going to mail you anything (I'm assuming reasonable intelligence here) so it doesn't matter what address you use. If you don't know anyone in the US, just Google for any address to use. You can still use your Canadian credit card. This is total non-issue. |

hmmm, whenever i tried buying ebooks from Barnes & Noble, it repeatedly said "delivered only to US addresses", which is ridiculous considering... everything. to add to what ProfCrash said, i was more than a little miffed to discover that this policy does not apply only to books that are restricted across the board. many unrestricted books i've bought on amazon were not available on B&N (as in they were restricted)
but i'm not going to re-re-re-re-re-re-re-reopen that can of worms. just wanted to point out that depending on where you are from the nook might be facing just as many restrictions (if not more) as the Kindle. for me that was the decider from the get-go. that and the awesome price of the kindle. whichever you choose i hope you get the one you love! ![]() Last edited by TenaciousBadger; 12-01-2010 at 03:34 AM. |

With Nook I could order by ebooks from Canada because it reads several formats. But with Kindle I wouldn't find any alternative, I have to buy for Amazon or die. So Kindle is not the right chose for a Canadian human reader. |

Geo restrictions prevent people from buying books outside of their country. Geo restrictions are in effect because different publishers control the distribution rights in different countries. This has nothing to do with the distributors, Amazon and B&N, but contracts signed by the Publisher and the Author. The books that are not available in different countries are not available because the Publisher with the rights to the book has chosen not to release the book in that country. A popular book, such as The Girl Who Played With the Dragon Tattoo, was available all over Europe before it was available in the US. Why? Not because Amazon and B&N and Borders did not want to sell it in the US but because the book had a different publisher throughout Europe then it did in the US. The European Publishers chose to release the book at a certain time and the US Publishers chose to release the book at a different time. Distributors in the US would have been violating contracts had they sold the book in the US before the contract date. So a book that is not available in Canada through Amazon due to geo restrictions will not be available through B&N. |
