Best Buy and nook color

I Called my nearest Best Buy to ask if they had any NookColors in and they told me they did, so I drove 50 miles to Best Buy and when I get there I see no nookColors. I then asked someone about them and they went off to research about them,My wife asked a worker who was near us and he said they if it was not out in the case then they don't have them. When the guy came back it turned out he was a manager and he said they they DO have them and they are Behind the registers. I went and bought one and When I was done I was looking at cases for the nook classic because I have one of those and the the worker whom my wife talked to earlier saw that I had it and he quickly walked away really fast. I then saw the price in Very little lettering right next to the nook, E-book reader $250. I was laughing so hard that they didn't put nook color on the tap. A customer like me then was wondering what I was laughing at and I told him and I told him about the E-books in general because he wanted one for a family member and he went and bought a Nook Color also. I wish I worked at best buy lol.

The Best Buy I went to told me on the phone they had some left, but when I went there within the hour and asked an employee and a manager who happened to be there at the time about it, they couldn't find any in the ebook area (which was a jumble by then, esp. on this weekend) and told me they were most likely sold out.

I was bummed out, but walked around to look at a couple of other things, and at the far end of that same area, a few meters away, there was a separate nook color display with several ones on the shelf... and apparently neither the employee or the manager were aware of it???? Best Buy, living up to their rep.

Just get one from your local B&N. If anything, avoiding giving your money to BB is worth it. That place sucks.

Local Best buy here has a display model at least. I didn't notice if they had any on the shelves.

You can even make it easier on yourself. Go onto the BB website and you can check out availability by store, place your order there (so it is reserved for you), walk in and pick it up.

Are you kidding, I LOVE Best Buy. But that's partially because nowadays there's not much left to choose from... Circuit City is gone, Radio Shack is on the threshold and department store "electronic" departments are overpriced and low on selection. At least in Texas we have Fry's Electronics, but as far as retail electronics, music, video, computers, etc, there's nothing left that is better than Best Buy, if there ever was.

That said, I'm highly disappointed to find that Best Buy's music CD selection has been reduced to less than 25% of what it was a year ago, and the same is true at Barnes & Noble and Borders. I get that people are buying music online now, but I'm not! Why pay $10 for an online album when I can get the CD with higher quality sound, easily ripped to MP3 or any other desired format, cover art and hard case that will outlast every computer??? Ugh. So, I'm reluctantly now having to order my CD's from Amazon and wait for shipping *sigh*

I think it must depend on where you live. Our Best Buy stores have staff that know the store layout (even if they aren't supremely knowledgeable of the products they are selling), a good product selection, and great customer service.

Fry's is great on selection, but it is often more difficult to track down an employee (probably due to the larger floor space).

And my favorite part: Fry's and Best Buy both have a unified queueing system so that you never get stuck in the slowest line! (Thoughts of Eddie Russett, Jasper Fforde's protagonist in Shades of Grey, come to mind here...)

Unfortunately, they are merely responding to changes in the market, as you point out. If people won't buy, then the stores are going to be hard-pressed to sell.

I research my purchases and then buy from the store with the lowest price and best return policy. If it's an in store purchase, I walk in, select the product, and then proceed to checkout. In the process, I totally brush off all attempts to sell me extras, like cases, cards, batteries, warranties, etc.

Another thing I totally disregard is the knowledge level of the staff. The only thing I expect from staff is their ability to find the product for me if I fail to find it within a minute.

I always check the BB website first. They're pretty good about listing available inventory. I ordered a nook color from there a few days ago. Unfortunately it had a couple of dead pixels. The great thing about BB is that they don't hassle you much about returns. If the return policy is 30 days rather than B&N's 14 days, it might be a good idea to go with BB. I had a friend buy one from B&N yesterday and she was told by the nook guy that the NC was nonrefundable, if opened, unless it was defective. Not sure whether or not that's true but I sure wouldn't buy one from BN if there was a chance I might change my mind.

I went to Best Buy because they had a lower price ($245 after $5 Reward Zone points vs $249 at B&N) and a better return policy (30 days vs 14 days at B&N).

Well, that sucks. Another reason to avoid B&N.

Same here. B&N stores are being really conservative about the pre-order dates they give out, though.

It sounds like another vote in favor of Best Buy. (I feel the same way, but the warranty prices have been dropping to the point where are actually become compelling ... damn them!)
