Borders compatibility error message

I just received a Kobo as a gift (i.e., I'm new here) and installed the Borders desktop (Windows) application that was on the Kobo. But when I try syncing the Kobo, I get the message: "We're sorry, but your eReader is not compatible with this version of the desktop application (v. 1.7.3)." What's up with this, and how do I resolve the problem?

I am not sure if you are talking about Borders in the US or Borders in Australia. In either case, there have recently been new versions of the desktop released. Probably the one that came on your reader is out of date.

Thanks; I should have specified that I was in the US. Downloading the new version now; I'll post an update here to let you know if it solved the problem.

Downloaded the new version; the problem is still there - everything appears exactly the same as before.

Tried downloading the software from Kobo's site - same problem, except it says "v. 1.7.5".

Maybe you have firmware version 1.0?
If so, there might be a middle step.

OK - can someone point me to instructions for updating the firmware? (I've tried doing some searching on this, but haven't hit on it yet.)

K, it is in stickies.
Download firmware 1.4, make SD card and follow tutorial.
If you use win, the best is to have live cd with linux and
usb stick for firmware. Card reader for an image, of course.
