Having problems with the touchscreen when charging.
The nook color is the first device that I have ever used that has a capacitive touchscreen. Normally, when it's not plugged in, it works perfectly fine, but the moment that I start charging it (via an electrical socket) the touchscreen immediately becomes so spastic that I dare not even try to look at the web as there's no telling what will get clicked on, or where I'll end up.
What I'm wondering is, is that normal? |

Doesn't sound right to me. I would return it for an exchange.
I don't have a Nook color yet but my Droid X (running Android with a capacitive screen) never does anything like that, plugged in and charging or not. |

I did some looking around B&N's forums and it's definitely not just me. One poster mentioned how he had his replaced and the replacement doesn't have the problem, some think that using the anti-glare screen protector might help.
I've seen some horror stories (thinking of the Kindle 2 and 3 in particular) where people end up going through a number of replacements before finding one that was perfect. I can live with the problem, especially since I've realised that it's only going to be a problem on days where I have an inordinate amount of time to waste away playing with it. |

I plugged the charger into my Nook Color last night before going to bed and left the charger plugged in all night. When I woke up this morning (about 6 hours later), the Nook Color said it was 89% charged, and "Not charging." I wonder why it was only 89% charged, and that it wasn't being charged even though the charger was plugged in.
I unplugged the charger and plugged it back in, and the Nook Color started charging. It took about 15 minutes for it to get from 89% to 100%. Has anyone experienced this? |

Part of it no, part of it yes.
The no part. I've charged it every night I've had it save for one night, which was to see how well it did while being suspended, and every time I'd look at it in the morning after charging it the charge would be at 99% or 100%. The yes part. I've noticed some very unusual jumps in the amount of charge that the device is supposed to have after I've plugged it into my PC. For instance. I just plugged in my NC to my computer. I went through all of the files as I wanted to delete a failed download. I had had a charge of 88% prior to plugging it in, had it plugged in for a matter of minutes, and when I unplugged it it was back at 100%. You're only supposed to get a "trickle" charge when connected to a PC, so there's only one conclusion that I can reach, and that's the software used to track the battery charge isn't functioning properly. |

The only time my screen acted spastic is when some raindrops got on it causing intermittent input as water is conductive.

The sensitivity of the is known. Mine does the same thing when charging. (Not an issue to me, as I don't read when it's plugged in.) The screen is set as fairly sensitive anyway, possibly thinking that most people would put a protective screen over it (they certainly wouldn't mind selling you one, anyway), and putting one on might help. If there's a B&N near by, you might try talking to them about it, as their in-store people are usually reasonably well trained and helpful.

I just got my replacement from B&N and it is identical to the old one. As soon as it is plugged in the touchscreen becomes unusable. Not going to bother swapping again and I will just hope firmware can fix it. At least this unit doesn't have all the dust under the screen that the old one had.

Glad you have a replaced unit. You've been waiting for a little bit. I'm still puzzled at the "touchscreen unusable when plugged in" thing. Mine doesn't have this problem.
![]() Well, I hope it is something that a firmware update can fix for you and others. |

I ended up using it as motivation to learn how to manage the battery, since then there has been only one time that the charge fell short of what I wanted, and it was only by a half hour.

I read for about two hours last night while plugged in and had no problems swiping.
Now, when the kids swipe pages on nookKids books with their wet multitouch techniques they've been able to lock up books to the point I had to back out to the home screen and reopen. I haven't been able to repeat these failures using Proper Swiping. So I do think it's possible to confuse the nookColor with spit and too many fingers. |

I found out yesterday that putting a metal wallet on top of the screen isn't a good idea. Went from page 190 or so to 485 in a matter of seconds. Sometimes, I'm an idiot.

I haven't used mine while charging via AC, but I do have one comment about the special micro-USB cable the NC uses with its extra long connector. It does not connect as easily as I would like. I find that most micro-USB cables are a bit more difficult to insert into devices than the mini-USB cables were, but the NC one is rather difficult to get aligned properly so that it can be completely inserted into the NC. It goes in part way, but then I have to tilt it up and down until it aligns properly and will then allow itself to be inserted the rest of the way. I have a bad feeling that if anything breaks on the NC it will be the micro-USB port.
Its a rather kluge design, and in my opinion unnecessary and a slap in the face from B&N not to use a standard cable. |

![]() As far the NC, I've noticed that I cannot place my finger on the screen then swipe or the page won't turn but the popup menu across the bottom will be displayed. So for me it is a learning curve to get the finger gestures correct--no humor intended, but make your own joke if you want to. All the other Android tablets I've used did not have sensitive touch screens--I always had to press hard then wait for a delayed reaction to occur. So kudos to B&N for making a usable touch screen Android tablet! Last edited by jswinden; 12-12-2010 at 11:05 AM. |
