New to EReading...???
Hi,
My wife and I both read quite a bit. Lately, she's mentioned a few times that she had seen people using e-readers. I can't determine if these were just off-the-cuff comments or hints that she'd like to have one herself. So I decided to buy her a Kobo for Christmas. I chose the Kobo as we do most of our book browsing/buying at Indigo or Coles (Canadian, eh?), because it seems to be more versatile as far as file formats go than the Kindle, and now has WiFi. I don't care, and I'm certain she wouldn't either, about the lack of a browser. We both have laptops and netbooks for that. I'm not so sure e-reading is for me. I spend a lot of time on my computer and would be considered a "gadget guy" but I don't know if I can get over the book-in-the-hand feeling when reading a "real" book. I think even moreso, it's the idea of spending hard-earned money for something that you can't tangibly put your hand on. On the other hand, our bookcases are overfull. I never throw a book out, rarely lend them out, but seldom have I re-read a book either. So they just collect... Anyway, as far as e-reading goes, I'll make her the guinea pig! Maybe she'll "take" to it. If she does, she might hook me as well. I think, deep down, that I'm hoping she does. Keith |

Hi KrowNB and welcome to Mobileread. I also bought my wife an ereader to see whether she would take to at - but after I had one and was convinced by how liberating they were. She never goes anywhere without it. Your wife is very lucky!

Welcome to MobileRead Keith.
Psst!! Ebooks ARE "real" books...just digital versions. I'm sure you meant to say "paper" books .... ![]() As for spending money on ebooks, there are literally 10's of thousands out there for free, legally. Written by masters of the art of writing, and many great low cost books are available by talented independent authors. A good place to start would be here, in our Patricia Clark Memorial Library. Hand formatted by our own members, eliminating the frustrations of wading thru errors or extraneous pages. The "feel the book in your hand" comment is common......I had it myself. After only a few minutes with my K1 2 1/2 yrs ago, I realized its the content, not the physical book itself, thats important. Hope you wind up feeling the same. |

Hi Keith and welcome to MobileRead. I felt like you about going over to an eReader. But, once I got it in hand, I has hooked; okay, okay, addicted.

Good to have your new company, Keith. I spend at least fourteen hours a working day gazing at a computer screen. I can assure you that, e-ink reading is an entirely different experience. There's nothing I like better than curcling up after a hard day's night of eye-straining work with an ebook reader. Best wishes. Neil

Welcome to MobileRead KrowNB from a fellow Canadian. I definitely hope your wife enjoys that Kobo and converts you as well!
I myself am a gadget geek but found my current ereader to be better than my pbooks as I'm not opposed to making annotations on my ebooks. If the Kobo isn't your cup of tea, there are always the Sony Readers (more expensive though but well worth with) or you could import an ereader from abroad. |

Hello, Keith, and welcome. I'm also a book lover and I never thought I'd love reading from an ereader. But I love my Kindle.
