It looks kind of interesting, but I can't read on the device I most want to read on...my dedicated ereader. So it's a non-starter for me at this time.

I signed on today. Here are some initial observations.

I use Ubuntu Linux and I tried to create an account using the Google Chrome browser and kept getting error 404 and 500 error messages. When I switched to Firefox I was able to create the account.

One of the options is to be able to import your books from Goodreads.com, but it didn't work for me. I tried in Opera and it still didn't work for me. The only other way to enter books is by purchasing them from Copia, indicating you own a book in the general collection, or entering the information by title or ISBN, one book at a time. There is no option to import books by uploading a list.

I did download the Windows version of the desktop application and it runs just fine on Linux with Wine.

Since the service is new there aren't that many active groups yet.

I notice they have a "Get 7 FREE eBooks" offer for signing up. How does that work?

So this only works with their desktop app and the iPad? It doesn't sync with any other devices? That seems like a major flaw. I wonder if the books you download from them will even work on other devices.

you have to download their reader app, sync to your copia account and the free books will be in the reader app.

Like heck I'm going to add yet ANOTHER piece of crap to deal with.

I'm exploring Copia, but haven't high hopes sadly...

I agree. To me it looks like they are over-selling it. Sites like mobileread and Goodreads are like the real deal, and it seems Copia is merely trying to "cash in" on the concept of a social book site.
