				Ebooks coming to Argentina

The spanish company Grammata will shortly start selling ebooks and ebook readers in Argentina. Reader's brand will be "Papyre", models offered will be Papyre 5.1 (US$ 300) (5") Papyre 6.1 (US$ 375) (6") Papyre 6.2 (US$ 450) (6" Touch) Papyre 6.2S (US$ 625) (Alex) Ebooks will use Adobe DRM The readers are certainly overpriced (according to the specifications, the 6.2 is similar to the Sony PRS-650, except that the Papyre has WiFi). Ebook estimated prices have not been unveiled. |

There's probably not enough competition from other companies. That's why they're priced so high.

There's absolutely no competition, these are the first ebook readers to be sold in the country. There is no ebook market either. The few of us who have an ereader have got them from outside the country. |

I was in Barbados last September and most people are unfamilliar with e-readers. I imagine when they get there they'll be very expensive too. For the time being I'd recommend searching for the PDF version online of the novel you want to read and download it to your computer. Otherwise download the Kindle or Adobe Digital software to read MOBI or ePUB files. However with my experience, PDF is easier on the eyes.

Nice news, but I agree... the product is overpriced... we have now various gadget dealers that shipped kindle and Sony readers from USA but, in most cases, doubled the original price... But in the end, it's good news... Last edited by Gerli; 11-20-2010 at 11:11 PM. |

With those products being overpriced in Argentina (I feel sorry for you all, being up here in Canada), I only see contraband ereaders making it into the market. What would probably help is if there was an Argentinian distributor of these devices. Maybe that would cut down the costs.

I don't know of anywhere to find Spanish ebooks (other than public domain), so even if theirs are expensive I'd be willing to splurge on a couple here and there!

I'd check out the author's website for starters, or even contact them or them through their publicist if they have one.

In Spain the Papyre 6.2 are sold for US$ 350.- If you take into account taxes, transportation, commision fees, etc., I don't think US$ 100 more are that much. Besides, in http://www.garbarino.com/informatica/e-readers you can buy it in 18 installments with no interest, as long as you have a Santander Rio credit card. In http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar you can get the Sony and Papyre, in several installments too, with or without interest, depending on your credit card's bank. The advantege of buying in Argentina is that you have warranty in the country. The big problem is the ex-change rate: 1 US$ = 4 ar$ |

The Papyre had a good response in the Annual Book Fair, currently been held on Buenos Aires, and a lot of people where viewing and touching an Ebook reader for first time. This appears to be the "launching year" for ebooks readers in Argentina. I'm currently organizing a communitarian purchase for the 6" Kindle Wi-Fi in an Argentinian Forum and a lot of people (36 until now!) purchase one, the Kindles arrives this friday, so expect a lot of Argentinians to come to MobileRead this weekend Quote:
