mysterious kindle-related charge

I just noticed a strange $3.60 charge on my bank account for "kindle charges" on nov. 8. I haven't used my kindle in a few months and definitely didn't buy anything. the other day I picked it up and browsed the web a little but that's all. on amazon's page I can't find any charges listed since april, in either the "individual charge" orders or in "your orders". any idea what they're charging me for? do they charge for web browsing now or something?

You are asking the wrong people.........

go here, click on the 'contact us' button, sign into your account, choose the 'call me' option, and they'll call you back almost immediately.

Sounds like someone somewhere bought a Kbook........

good call, thanks for the link. they said it was from documents I had sent to the kindle. looking at instapaper I apparently did have something small sent on the 8th and I guess I was charged for a bunch of stuff all at once or something. Amazon's interface makes no sense, it has a thing for "order date April 16" that says I was charged $4.05. when I expand April 16 it has a bunch of instapaper charges up to October 6th for $0.15 each. so why does it say April 16? I guess there must have been more charges since then that they don't show me yet that they are billing to me at some arbitrary time and which they will show me attached to some arbitrary date. oh well, at least their customer service is good.

Glad you got things sorted.....

On your amazon account page, under "manage your Kindle" have you looked at

"Your Personal Document Charge Limit "

You can set it to $0.00

I don't know if that would make a difference, but it can't hurt!

I did that early on; Amazon then sends your documents to xxxxx@free.kindle.com., instead of to xxxxx@kindle.com. Never got charged a cent for my documents.

evil hidden charges

wow, this is quite evil... What happens if I buy a kindle as a gift for a friend or family member? Could they do anything with their device that will cause Amazon to charge me?

Evil? How? You might want to re-read the posts.

If you buy a K for a friend or family member, it should be re-registered to their account.

I thought the OP got charged and didn't know what for. Did I misunderstand something?

Is it possible to buy and use the K3 without "registering" at all?

The OP was charged for sending personal documents over 3G. The charge is 15 cents per meg. If you don't want this to ever happen, there's an option to limit charges for personal documents to $0. Then you can either get them over wifi or over your USB cable

Yes, but why would you? You couldn't buy any Amazon books.

If you are buying as a gift, there's an option to check so it will be sent to the recipient de-registered.

I don't think that the 3G or WiFi works if the Kindle is not registered. So by not registering it you can only side load books that have been converted to Mobi or were originally in Mobi format.

No. The charge is made to the account to which the Kindle is registered.

I've noticed that Amazon kind of lets my 15cent charges accumulate and then charges my credit card when it gets up to a couple of bucks. It sounds like that is what happened here.

For me, the primary purpose of an ereader is to read books, not to buy them from Amazon - if I wanted to do that, I wouldn't need a kindle, I could do that on a PC.

Good question, I need to find out if the wifi and pdf viewer work without registering before I get the K3...

That is true but a lot of people (myself included) like the convenience of being able to buy a book right there on the device.

Last I checked, you couldn't use the webbrowser on an unregistered Kindle. It might be possible to do it on a jailbroken K3 and before the K3 came out, there were a ton of hacks to allow people outside the US (without cell access to Whispernet) to register their devices with Amazon but to be honest, I never checked. The PDF viewer (well, there's no separate PDF viewer - it's integrated into the main reader application) should work without registration.

You can't even use collections on a non-registered Kindle, and this is something you probably really want in a book reader!
