Newbie Question About Library Books

I feel so dumb. I'm very new at this, and can't figure it out.

I borrowed a book from my library. I downloaded it onto my desktop. How do i get it onto my Kobo?

I tried opening it and it keeps wanting to do something using a Sony ID account. I don't have a Sony e-reader. The book is saved as an .ascm

Can someone help me? Please? I am completely clueless about this.

Thanks.

An .acsm file is a like a link pointing to where the real ePub or PDF is on the server.

You'll need to download Adobe Digital Editions and register an Adobe ID (so you can later transfer your downloaded books to up to 6 devices). Then you double-click or drag the .acsm file to the Adobe Digital Editions app, and it will download an ePub or PDF that you can transfer to your Kobo.

I think you also have to register your Kobo with the ADE app, probably by plugging it in and waiting for ADE to auto-detect it. The details are somewhere in the Kobo User Manual.

Hope this helps, and welcome to MobileRead!

ok, so I have done that. And I have authorized my Kobo with ADE.

It has opened the book in ADE. How do I get it into my Kobo? Do I save the version that is now opened in ADE somehow, so that I then transfer it to my Kobo?

Thanks again.

When you open Adobe Digital Editions, you should see your Kobo device under your bookshelf on the lower left hand side. You can open your library book (if not done so already) so it shows up on your bookshelf, then you can drag and drop to your Kobo.

Once you unplug your Kobo, it will 'update' any recent additions/changes to your Kobo and you will then see the library book on your Kobo.

You can see when your book(s) expires on your bookshelf, but your Kobo won't tell you.

I've already read 3 library books - so much fun! Any books you finish before your 3 week lending period is over you can 'check back in' via ADE so you can open up your borrowing room if you want to borrow more.

Have fun! I know I am! I LOVE the Kobo for borrowing books!!! Very simple once you've done it one or two times.

Hi Nanner,

When you have your Kobo eReader hooked up to your computer, you should hopefully be able to see it in the left-hand panel of Adobe Digital Editions. Once you've downloaded the book, it can be dragged from the library to the Kobo. Your Kobo will update once you disconnect it from the computer, and the new book should appear on the device. After the lending period is over, you won't be able to access it any longer.

I had some issues when I first was trying to get library ebooks on my Kobo as I had a really old version of ADE. I had to uninstall/reinstall to get things working, but now it is quick and easy to read library books on the eReader. And no more late fines!

And are they PDF? Then you'll see them under "Documents" instead of "Books".

I went through the entire process again and ended up with the first book. I'm a very fast reader. I'll be through that in a couple of days and will try the second book on its own.

Off to work now, but I'll check the set time when I get home.

Thanks again. I appreciate your help.

Hi Nanner,

Try looking through all books on your Kobo, not just your I'm Reading section. I have found that adding new books seems to send all my existing I'm Reading books back to the general bookshelf - it's a real pain as I have a mix of owned and borrowed books on mine and want to make sure I read my library books first, before they expire!

(Of course, they could be PDF books, in which case they will be under Documents as dmacmart suggested!)

cheers

Tracey
