PRS-650 doesn't display 'a' with macron (ā)
Hi,
I'm reading an EPUB version of 'The return of the dancing master', and the name 'La Cābana' is rendered 'La C?bana' by the 650. So, it doesn't grok 'a' with macron (ā). Adobe Digital Editions has the same problem. Any idea what to do? Martin |

There are several of those letters Sony's reader can't display I've found. If it's a word that doesn't often come up I ignore it but if it's a word that is used often I open up the ebook in Sigil and replace the letter. For instance I read about about Dracula and every other page he was referred to as Tepeş, on my reader it read Tepe?, I changed it to Tepes.
It doesn't solve the problem but at least I don't get annoyed and thrown out of the story every time the word is used. |

It is Adobe's fault. There's a bug in Adobe Digital Edition: as a consequence of it all of the ereaders which support DRM Adobe CAN'T display most of the Unicode characters.

I think it's because the characters are missing in the font. If so, using a different font will solve the problem. To do this, you need to copy a new font onto the reader, then use Calibre to "tell the book" to use that font. Someone has made a helpful PDF about it: Search this forum for "Guide to changing fonts." For a font with a full character set, try Times New Roman or Georgia.

Thanks Rumpleteazer - I had already changed 'ā' to 'a' to avoid getting '?'.
My PRS-650 displays the following two accents correctly: Quote:
Gepetto: Quote:
elemenoP: what is the 650's default font? It looks like Times New Roman, except that font does display 'ā' correctly on my PC. Still, I may try what you suggest, if it bugs me enough! Martin |

I think this very well might be true. I had uploaded one file with the author's name as Čapek, which showed fine in the collections and the menu, but was showing as capek when I actually opened the epub. The font idea might work, will check it out later. Thanks!
